SA-born Steyn scores FOUR tries as Scotland tame Tonga

Johannesburg-born Kyle Steyn scored four tries as Scotland crushed Tonga 60-14 in their Autumn Nations Series opener at Murrayfield on Saturday in preparation for tougher Tests against Australia and South Africa.

Gregor Townsend handed international debuts to eight players in an experimental side that ran in 10 tries. Steyn scored four, Rufus McLean two and Pierre Schoeman, George Turner, Nick Haining and Oli Kebble one each.

British & Irish Lions players Stuart Hogg and Finn Russell and Gloucester flyhalf Adam Hastings were among Scotland’s high-profile absentees after English and French clubs did not release players outside the official Test window.

McLean, Sione Tuipulotu, Jamie Hodgson and Schoeman were Scotland’s four uncapped starters, while Luke Crosbie, Jamie Dobie, Ross Thompson and Marshall Sykes earned first caps from the bench.

The result made for ideal preparation before Scotland’s November Tests against the Wallabies and world champion Springboks.

Ali Price identified Scotland’s set-pieces as the platform for their dominant performance and described leading the team for the first time as co-captain with Jamie Ritchie as “tear in the eye stuff”.

“You dream of playing for Scotland, but you don’t really dream of being captain. To get that honour was massive,” he told Amazon Prime Video.

Tonga beat Scotland for the first time in 2012, with a shock 21-15 win in Aberdeen prompting head coach Andy Robinson’s resignation.

But a repeat never looked likely in Edinburgh after the Scots raced into a 36-9 lead by half-time with six tries.

Glasgow wing McLean opened the scoring just seven minutes into his international debut before James Faiva reduced the deficit to 7-3 with a penalty.

McLean then embarrassed the more experienced Faiva, dancing around the full-back to notch his second try in the 15th minute.

Faiva’s second penalty made it 14-6 but Scotland extended their lead after a flowing passing move ended with Steyn scoring his first international try in the 22nd minute.

Tonga’s spirited performance forced errors from the Scots and Faiva converted a third penalty to make the score 19-9.

But the hosts remained relentless, with Schoeman scoring a debut try from close range and Steyn grabbing his second of the match.

Glasgow’s Steyn completed his hat-trick just before half-time as he finished a dynamic attack that started in Scotland’s 22.

Tonga’s difficult year has included a 102-0 drubbing by New Zealand and their misery continued after the break as Turner drove over following a lineout and rolling maul.

The visitors got a consolation try through David Lolohea in the 58th minute but replacements Haining and Kebble added further gloss to the scoreline for the home side.

Steyn capped his memorable day with a fourth score just before full-time in Scotland’s first match in front of a Murrayfield crowd since March 2020.

Sbu Nkosi set to miss Springboks’ Test v Wales due to visa issues

Springbok wing Sbu Nkosi is set to miss Saturday’s Test against Wales in Cardiff due to passport and visa issues.

According to Sunday’s Rapport newspaper, while Nkosi does has a valid passport, he has too few blank pages in it to be able to apply for a visa.

As a result, he has had to apply for a new passport before he can apply for his Schengen visa.

Without his visa he’s unable to fly – and is highly unlikely to be able to obtain one before Monday due to the long weekend.

Incredibly, Nkosi had been instructed by SA Rugby in June to get his passport in order, but was reportedly unable to do so because of the Covid-19 pandemic and “other issues”.

In Nkosi’s absence, Makazole Mapimpi is expected to shift to the right wing with Aphelele Fassi earning a well-deserved start in the No 11 jersey.

Regular wing Cheslin Kolbe will play no part in the Springboks’ end-of-year tour Tests against Wales, Scotland and England.

Meanwhile, a dozen overseas-based players who have been playing for their clubs in recent weeks will join the Springboks on Sunday.

IEC urges voters to return to their voting districts

Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) CEO,  Sy Mamabolo has urged voters to return to their voting districts by 5PM on Sunday if they have travelled and ensure that they cast their vote.

He has expressed concern about voter turnout in the special voting process this weekend.

Mamabolo was responding to a question. He was asked about the fact that many people had treated the weekend as a long one and possibly travelled.

“If you have travelled, please do come back to your voting station on time because you won’t be able to vote anywhere else but the voting district where you are registered unlike in national and provincial elections where you will have an opportunity to vote outside of your district. So all those who may have travelled have until tomorrow really to travel back to the place where they are registered,” says Mamabolo.

Tselane expects lower voter turnout on Monday

Executive Chair of the Institute of Election Management Services in Africa, Terry Tselane has predicted a low turnout on election day on Monday.

Tselane says people are going to treat the day as a long weekend and travel to different places which would be out of their voting districts.

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC)  has kicked off with special votes on Saturday. Gauteng registered over 129 000 applications for special votes at voting stations and through home visits.

Tselane says a different day should have been chosen such as a Wednesday.

“It is likely slightly lower. Once you put the election day on a Monday people take sometimes Friday off knowing that they’ve got now a long weekend where they don’t have to go to work on Monday and it has an impact. Does have a

LGE 2021 | Political parties spend less on traditional media advertising

New data shows that political parties have spent much less on advertising in the traditional media in the past six months to September. The biggest losers are radio and television.

According to advertising monitoring agency, The Nielsen Company, political parties only started using radio and television to woo voters at the end of last month.

Preliminary data compiled by the company shows that party spending on print, radio and television for Monday”s local government elections declined by about 80%  compared to spending in the 2016 polls.

“What we are seeing in ad spend now is a significant reduction compared to 2016. If you look at this point before elections, measurement of total spend up until 2 months ago in 2021 compared to 2016, the rate card of ad spend in SA was just over a million rand across all political parties for all traditional media types of exposure,” says Murphy.

Municipal Elections: IEC results centre evacuated after power outage

The Independent Electoral Commission’s (IEC) Results Operations Centre in Tshwane had to be evacuated on Saturday evening, 30 October 2021, after a power outage.

IEC centre evacuation ‘not for emergency purposes’

The electrical fault at the IEC ROC is in no way related to load-shedding. Tshwane Emergency Services spokesperson Thabo Charles Mabaso said a circuit breaker had tripped.

“I can confirm that there was no fire at the IEC results centre. The only report that we received from our members is that an electric circuit on a DB BOX became faulty resulting on the power to be cut off. And the center had to be evacuated to give the technicians more time to fix the electrical problem,” he said.

News outlets will also be camped there – one of them is SABC News, which has been broadcasting from the venue since last week. It was impacted by the evacuation and some of its coverage from the site had to be moved back to its Auckland Park headquarters.

The evacuation happened after 18:00, but it was not for emergency purposes.

The IEC also confirmed the evacuation on Saturday and said no ballot papers were on site.

“We confirm a power failure at the National Results Operations Centre in Tshwane this evening, as a result of a faulty transformer. Centre was evacuated for safety, with emergency services on standby. There are no ballots or election materials on site,” the electoral body said in a short tweet.
