Wet weekend with possible flooding expected in Gauteng and other parts of SA

A wet weekend with possible flooding, severe thunderstorms, hail and strong winds is expected in Gauteng and other parts of SA on Saturday and Sunday.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a warning for these conditions.

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT?

It is monitoring a potential risk of road flooding for motorists across the road network in Gauteng and other provinces this Saturday and Sunday.

“On a broader scale, residents in Gauteng, Mpumalanga, the Free State, and North West, as well as the northern areas of KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern and Western Cape, should be aware of the risk of flash flooding, especially in low-lying areas,” the SAWS said.

Showery conditions are expected across many areas in the country on Saturday. This excludes the eastern regions of the Vhembe and Mopani districts.

FLASH-FLOODING IS EXPECTED IN THESE AREAS:

Flash-flooding can be expected in the low-lying areas of the eastern Free State, the southern half of North West, and Gauteng.

The Midlands, northern areas of KwaZulu-Natal, and Mpumalanga were also at risk of flooding, the SAWS said.

“The residents of informal settlements, especially those along river basins, are advised to take care, as such dwellings could be exposed to flooding.

Disaster management practitioners are advised that some communities in the above-mentioned areas could become displaced and require emergency shelter,” it furthermore said.

SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS EXPECTED IN THESE AREAS:

According to the SAWS the extreme weather conditions anticipated in the days ahead relate to the expected development of a so-called “cut-off low pressure system” in the upper atmosphere, which is likely to be positioned over the western areas of the Northern Cape on Saturday.

Severe thunderstorms associated with heavy downpours can be expected over the central and northern parts of the Eastern and Western Cape, the eastern areas of the Northern Cape, as well as the western parts of the Free State and North West provinces.”

MOTORISTS WERE ADVISED TO TAKE EXTRA CARE WHEN DRIVING

Motorists are further advised that driving conditions in some areas are likely to become dangerous due to poor visibility and slippery roads

Moreover, extra care should be taken when negotiating bridges and low-water crossings that are susceptible to flash-flooding.

RISK OF LARGE AMOUNTS OF SMALL HAIL

“Other thunderstorm-related hazards include the risk of large amounts of small hail, which may cause damage to vehicles and infrastructure

Additionally, strong winds may result in difficulty in navigation at sea with short-term disruptions of small harbours and ports between Cape Columbine and Cape Agulhas on Saturday,” it said.

As the weather system migrates further eastwards on Sunday, weather conditions are correspondingly expected to shift to the east.

WIND WARNING FOR SUNDAY AND MONDAY

“However, on Sunday evening and overnight into Monday morning, the cut-off low will weaken into a steep upper trough feature. Consequently, surface winds over the south-eastern parts of the country (including the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and southern Free State) will be fairly strong during this particular period.”

The SAWS said a return to the familiar cycle of the afternoon and early evening thunderstorms could be expected for the eastern parts of the country, extending from Monday to at least Thursday next week.

Ralf Rangnick identifies first Manchester United transfer target, fans will love what he has said about the club!

New Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick has only been officially in the job for one season, but has already identified his first transfer target.

READ | WHO IS MANCHESTER UNITED’S NEW INTERIM MANAGER RALF RANGNICK? HERE IS EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW!

According to the latest reports Rangnick is expected to go back to one of his former sides to secure his first Manchester United signing.

Manchester United fans agreed that a midfield signing was needed

Even though Manchester United looked to have had an outstanding previous transfer window under former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, fans still felt there was something missing. A section of the club’s supporters always felt as if, although the team secured the signings of superstars, Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho, they were still adamant that the squad lacked a midfield signing.

READ | MANCHESTER UNITED ARE YET TO ANNOUNCE RALF RANGNICK, BUT LOOKS LIKE THEY’VE BEEN BEATEN TO IT!

Although many midfield names were branded about by the media, including the likes Eduardo Camavinga, Ruben Neves, Saul Niguez and Declan Rice, under the tutelage of Solskjaer, none of the above were seen signing for Manchester United. Now it is thought that Rangnick has also identified that position as the first he would like to rectify at the club. His target, however, is not one of the names mentioned above, nor is it one ever linked to the Red Devils before.

Rangnick wants Haidara’s

According to widespread reports in Europe Rangnick is targeting his former midfielder at RB Leipzig to help him solve the midfield problem at the club. The player in question Amadou Haidara, and the Daily Mail UK even goes as far as claiming that Manchester United are scheduled to watch him in action Union Berlin and Manchester City.

If Haidara’s past comments are anything to go by then Rangnick won’t even have to do any convincing to get him to sign on the dotted line for Manchester United. In 2019 he didn’t mince his words at all, while explaining his desire to one day turn out for the Red Devils.

is his dream about to come true?

“My dream club is Manchester United, I will fight with all my strength to one day play for that club.” Haidara told Foot Mali.  Now with all the rumours floating around and intensifying daily, it seems as if Rangnick maybe about to make his dreams finally come true.

Sibanye Stillwater: Four miners DIE in seperate incidents

The mining industry has once again been struck with tragedy after four workers died in two separate incidents at Sibanye Stillwater operations in the Free State and North West on Friday, 4 December 2021.

According to Sibanye Stillwater, a mineworker at its Khuseleka shaft in Rustenburg, North West, passed away in the early hours due to a fall of ground incident.

“Later this morning, at about 10am, three colleagues at shaft three, at the Beatrice operations, passed away, following a tragic trackless mobile machinery incident. The board and management of Sibanye-Stillwater extend their sincere condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the deceased,” the company said.

SIBANYE STILLWATER CLOSES OPERATIONS

Sadly, that’s not all: Earlier this week, one other mineworker died in a blasting incident. Sibanye Stillwater CEO Neil Froneman has expressed concern over the rise in mining-related fatalities, which have unions up in arms.

“Despite our extraordinary efforts this year, the number of fatal incidents we have experienced are of grave concern for management and the board of Sibanye-Stillwater. We are appalled by the loss of our employees’ lives at our mines over the past year. While we cannot rectify the harm that has occurred, we will continue to support the families as best we can in their grief,” Froneman said.

This year alone, 18 mining employees have lost their lives.

Sibanye Stillwater Vice President James Wellsted told Newzroom Afrika that both sites in the Free State and North West have been closed and will remain closed until an investigation is complete.

“We’ll be going to the site where the incident happened with the regulators and inspectors to determine what happened so we can avoid it the future. There has been an increase in incidences recently despite all the safety precautions that are in place, we will be launching an investigation to determine what has been causing all these incidences,” Wellsted said.

Amanda du Pont & Jub Jub claims: Can you be raped by your partner?

Actress Amanda du Pont accused musician and television personality Jub Jub of raping her via a video posted to Instagram on 2 December. This posed a question of rape within relationships.

AMANDA AND MASECHAKA ACCUSE JUB JUB OF RAPE

Jub Jub claimed he “smashed” Amanda du Pont on an episode of Podcast And Chill on 1 December – but the actress claimed she was raped by the Uyajola 9/9 host for two years.

“I was raped, physically and emotionally abused for two years by Jub Jub. The only thing I did wrong was keep quiet. But that ends here I will not be publicly ridiculed by this criminal. Him and Mac G saw it fit to drag my name on their podcast for clout at the cost of amplifying a Gender Based Violence Case,” she said.

After Amanda’s allegations – Broadcast journalist and spokesperson to minister Nathi Mthethwa, Masechaba Khumalo claimed that she was also raped by Jub Jub. She went on to say that she was a virgin and this took place at his mother, “Mama Jackie’s” house.

“I believe @AmandaDupont. Molemo Maarohanye (Jub Jub) raped me too. It happened in Mama Jakie’s house in Naturena. He was my boyfriend. I was a teenager. I was a virgin,” tweeted Khumalo.

CAN YOU BE RAPED BY YOUR PARTNER?

Amanda was considered to be in a relationship with Jub Jub at the time. Khumalo also said that Jub Jub was her boyfriend at the time. This poses the question – Can you be raped by your partner? Experts say yes!

It all comes down to consent. If you do not consent to sex, that make’s it unconsensual sex which can fall under sexual assault or rape.

“Any time someone forces himself/herself on you sexually without your consent, this can be sexual assault or rape.  Even if you’re married to or in a relationship with the person who is assaulting or raping you, this doesn’t make it any less real,” according to Womens Law.

Seriously! Man wears a FAKE arm to avoid getting vaccinated

You can’t make this stuff up! An Italian man now faces fraud charges after he showed up at his vaccine appointment wearing a fake arm in an attempt to get a vaccine certificate without actually getting the jab. Anti-vaxxers may consider this a deceivingly smart way to circumvent vaccine mandates as more countries consider them, including in South Africa.

In Italy, people will not be allowed entry into gyms, restaurants and theatres, without a vaccination certificate.

MAN BUSTED FOR WEARING FAKE ARM TO AVOID VACCINE

According to The Guardian, the 50-year-old wore a silicone prosthetic to the vaccine center in Biella, a town in the northern Piemonte region near Turin. The nurse who was set to vaccinate him was, however, not fooled by the deception and immediately noticed when he lifted the arm.

“The color of the skin was anomalous, much lighter compared to the hands or the face of the patient,” Filippa Bua told CNN.

She then inspected the arm then realised that it was fake.

“I first felt sorry for the man, thinking that he had a prosthesis and wondering if I had somehow forced him to give me the wrong arm. But then he admitted he was wearing the fake arm on purpose to avoid getting the vaccine!”

Italian nurse Filippa Bua

The Piedmont regional government condemned the man’s attempt to cheat the system.”The case could be classified as ‘ridiculous,’ except that we are talking about a gesture of enormous gravity, unacceptable for the sacrifice that the whole community is paying for the pandemic,” a joint communiqué from the Piedmont region’s President and health councilor reads.

Am’s stunning intercept try inspires Sharks win – WATCH

The result was the perfect way for the Sharks to end the year, with Am leading the charge for the Sharks as they demonstrated just how powerful they can be when all of their Springboks are available.

READ | STUART BERRY QUITS REFEREEING FOR FULL-TIME TMO ROLE

Below you can check out some of the standout moments from the URC match:

Report: Sharks too strong for Bulls

David Kriel touched down against the run of play as the Bulls took a 13-9 lead into half-time, but skipper Lukhanyo Am’s terrific intercept try and Kerron van Vuuren’s late touchdown helped the Sharks pick up their second win of the season.

Am was one of several Springboks returning to a strong Sharks side for a Round 12 clash brought forward following the postponement of cross-hemisphere clashes in South Africa in Rounds 6 and 7, with Siya Kolisi and Makazole Mapimpi also among those making their first URC outings.

Boeta Chamberlain kicked 20 points for the Sharks, while Morne Steyn racked up 11 for the visitors at Jonsson Kings Park, which hosted 2,000 fans for the first time since the start of the pandemic.

Sbu Nkosi squandered the Sharks’ first real sight of the try line having dusted himself down after sustaining an apparent shoulder injury in making a crunching tackle on Madosh Tambwe.

Chamberlain missed an opportunity to open the scoring from the tee before Nkosi spilled the ball as he looked to touch down in the corner after a kick forward from Am had sparked a period of Sharks pressure on the Bulls’ line.

The home fly-half did put three points on the board with a straightforward penalty as the match approached the 20-minute mark, but the Bulls scored the game’s opening try with their first meaningful attack thanks to Kriel’s stretch for the line, with Steyn adding the extras.

Steyn and Chamberlain then traded a pair of kicks apiece to send the Bulls in with a four-point lead at half-time.

Chamberlain dragged a penalty wide of the posts early in the second period, but he reduced the deficit to a single point with his next attempt and was on target again after Am superbly intercepted a Steyn pass to charge half the length of the field and under the posts, opening up a 19-13 lead.

Steyn pulled the Bulls back within three in the 57th minute, but Chamberlain kicked two more penalties either side of Lizo Gqoboka being sin-binned for collapsing a scrum, and two more misses on the night mattered little as Van Vuuren went over from a driving maul to put 14 points between the teams.

We’ve got the latest news stories and headlines in South Africa on Saturday 4 December 2021.

Since news broke of the new variant Omicron, South Africa has been recording thousands of new COVID-19 cases daily. On Friday South Africa recorded 16 055 new COVID-19 cases.

And what is more concerning is that the NICD said an emerging trend in the fourth wave is that there is an increase in children admitted to hospital, especially children under the age of four years old.

“Over 100 children under the age of 4 were admitted to hospital in the first two weeks of the 4th wave,” Dr Waasila Jassat, the Public Health Specialist at the NICD said.

COVID-19: SA records just over 16 000 cases, positivity increases to 24,3%

South Africa recorded more than 16 000 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, 3 December, according to the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD). The 65 990 tests conducted over the past 24 hours represent a positivity rate of 24,3 percent up from yesterday’s 22,4 percent. Gauteng crossed the 10 000 case threshold.

The 16 055 new COVID-19 cases detected in South Africa on Friday brings the total number of active cases in the country to 61 361. Unfortunately, 25 more people died of COVID-19-related complications, according to the NICD, bringing the death toll to 89 944.

There were 279 people admitted to hospital for COVID-19 treatment within the latest testing cycle. The 258 private and 407 public hospitals reporting to the NICD now have 3202 patients admitted.

COVID-19 fourth wave: ‘Unprecedented’ rise in cases – over 100 children under the age of 4 admitted to hospital

Health Minister Dr Joe Phaahla led a briefing on South Africa’s fight against COVID-19 and the national vaccine rollout on Friday morning, 3 December. Since the emergence of the Omicron variant, new cases in the have increased by over 300 percent, said the minister.

Dr Waasila Jassat, the Public Health Specialist at the NICD, spoke about the state of hospitalisations in the country.

She said there has been a rapid increase in hospitalisations in Gauteng – and admissions trends are higher than in the previous waves. Meanwhile, the North West, Mpumalanga, Limpopo and Eastern Cape are displaying smaller increases.

Jassat said an emerging trend in the fourth wave is that there is an increase in children admitted to hospital, especially children under the age of four years old. “Over 100 children under the age of 4 admitted to hospital in the first two weeks of the 4th wave.”

The NICD stressed the importance of surge preparedness and said it should include paediatric beds and staff.

N3 Truck BLOCKADE: Traffic starts to move as truck drivers taken in for questioning

The traffic on the N3 was starting to move on Friday evening after several truck drivers were taken in for questioning.

According to police spokesperson Brigadier Jay Naicker, police have taken a number of truck drivers in for questioning after their trucks were found parked across both lanes of the N3 near Van Reenen.

“In the early hours of this (Friday) morning, police were notified of the blockade and responded to the scene. Police officers found that the trucks were abandoned by the drivers who removed the keys before they left,” he said.

Naicker said police were able to locate the drivers and the keys for their vehicles.

“The trucks were removed and traffic is able to move albeit very slowly. We urge motorists to avoid the area until traffic is flowing smoothly. Additional police officers have been deployed to the area to ensure no further blockades on the route,” he said.

The N3 toll route between Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal was blocked for the entire Friday due to a massive truck blockade.

Drivers were diverted to alternative routes.

Gauteng health dept reveals – expired sanitiser worth R12.7m discarded

The Gauteng health department has had to discard 141 000 half-litre bottles of expired sanitiser at a whopping cost of R12.7 million to taxpayers, MEC Nomathemba Mokgethi has revealed.

Mokgethi disclosed this in the Gauteng legislature in a written reply to a question from the DA’s Jack Bloom.

According to Bloom, Mokgethi said the department paid almost R100 million for 544 000 units of sanitiser for the Covid-19 pandemic. A total of 141 000 units – about 70 000 litres – could not be used as they had expired.

They are being stored in a quarantine area at a warehouse.

“Mokgethi says that the sanitisers expired as they had a limited product validity period of one year, from 31 March 2020 to 31 March 2021,” he said.

Pics and video: Diepsloot locals grab cash from bombed CIT robbery

It was all smoke and money in Diepsloot. A bombed CIT truck robbery motivated residents to run to the scene to pick up cash on Friday morning.

As reported on Friday morning via social media, the CIT truck robbery was attacked with an explosion on the N14/R511 intersection in Diepsloot, Gauteng.

“#CITRobbery N14/R511 Diepsloot. Cash van bombed,” Mzansi’s social cohesion advocate Yusuf Abramjee reported.

But something equally dramatic had taken place earlier before the report…. With no fear for the law, possible gunfire, a delayed bomb eruption, smoke or the flaming fire, residents from the immediate area ran from the Diepsloot housing to the burning CIT truck robbery scene to grab cash!

Video evidence was posted by Ambjee with a caption that said: “Free for all! #CITRobbery R511 Diepsloot.”

Watch | Merry Christmas! – Durban looters steal liquor from lorry’s lost load

The festive season has come early for opportunists in Durban, after they promptly descended upon a liquor truck that lost its load on Friday. The vehicle was emptied out, and the looters in question have stocked up for Christmas.

This incident took place on Edwin Swales Drive, just outside of Durban’s bustling city centre. Traffic has been slow-going for most of the day, due to terrible weather conditions and an organised ‘truck blockade’ on the N3.

Gavin Kelly, CEO of the Road Freight Association (RFA), was less than impressed with what he witnessed this morning. He has condemned the ‘violence and looting’ reported in various incidents across the city.

Benin soldiers killed in jihadist attack in north: military sources

Two soldiers were killed on Thursday when jihadists attacked a military post in north Benin near the border with Burkina Faso, military sources said, in a rare Islamist militant assault in the West African state.

Benin borders three countries battling a jihadist insurgency that has spread across the Sahel region and prompted calls for more cooperation to halt its expansion south to Gulf of Guinea states.

BENIN SOLDIERS CASUALTIES

“We lost two of our men,” said one Benin military official after the post in Porga in Atacora region was attacked in the early hours of Thursday. “We also have some wounded soldiers.”

A second source close to the army chief of staff blamed the attack on jihadists and confirmed the toll of two soldiers dead and also one of the assailants.

JIHADISTS SPILLING INTO BENIN

Benin’s military has not officially commented on the attack.

The small coastal country has been a relatively safe haven in a region struggling with jihadist violence that has spilt over from Nigeria and Mali.

Only one jihadist attack has been officially confirmed in Benin.

JIHADIST ATTEMPTS ON BURKINA FASO

Two French tourists were kidnapped in 2019 and their tour guide killed in the remote Pendjari park on the border with Burkina Faso.

They were rescued soon afterwards by French special forces in northern Burkina Faso where they had been taken.

READ: Burkina says killed dozens of ‘terrorists’ in border sweep

GROUPS COMMUNAL CONFLICTS

But several jihadist groups operate just over the border from north Benin in Niger and Burkina Faso, including groups tied to Islamic State’s African affiliates.

A Dutch security report earlier this year warned that jihadist groups could coopt communal conflicts in Benin’s north to extend their influence.

TENSIONS OVER RESOURCES

Benin, like other parts of the Sahel, has struggled with growing tensions between farmers and nomadic herders over resources, land and water.

Benin’s northern border region is also a haven for gangs involved in smuggling, who are believed to maintain informal ties with jihadists.

SECURITY FORCES TARGETED

Last year, one Benin police officer was killed when gunmen attacked a police post in the far north of the country – the first time Benin security forces in the border area have been targeted.

Benin officials played down links to jihadists, but the incident deepened concerns over spillover from the Sahel.

WEST AFRICAN UNREST

Last month, Ivory Coast also began strengthening military deployments on its northern border and seeking stronger security ties with neighbours as it looks to contain the threat from the north.

Since the Sahel conflict first erupted in Mali in 2012, fighting has spread to Niger and Burkina Faso, claiming thousands of lives and displacing more than two million more.

Kaizer Chiefs forced to FORFEIT clash against Cape Town City!

Kaizer Chiefs have elected to forfeit their home DStv Premiership match against Cape Town City FC which was scheduled to take place at the FNB Stadium on Saturday, 4 December.

This comes after the Soweto giants confirmed no fewer than 31 staff and players had tested positive for Covid-19.

Amakhosi also confirmed that they wrote to the Premier Soccer League (PSL) to have their five league matches this month postponed, starting with their clash against the Citizens.

However, that appeal was declined by the PSL’s executive committee.

Cape Town City FC chairperson John Comitis – who is part of the PSL exco – confirmed that they had sat and decided against Kaizer Chiefs’ request to have their matches put on hold.

“I think it’s quite straightforward. The game has not been postponed officially by the league. We will be at the game. It was discussed at the exco. And the circumstances were debated but unfortunately, those are confidential,” Comitis said.

The Citizens took to social media to post images of the team preparing to depart Cape Town International Airport on Friday, heading to Johannesburg to honour their clash against the Glamour Boys.

Amakhosi, though, issued a statement early in the evening, saying they’ve forfeited the match.

The Kaizer Chiefs statement read:

In light of the recent outbreak of Covid-19 infections that has befallen the Club, Kaizer Chiefs submitted two letters to the Premier Soccer League pleading for the postponement of the remaining matches scheduled for the month of December following the outbreak.

In the interim, the prevailing circumstances dictate that Kaizer Chiefs must sadly confirm that the Club will be unable to host the match against Cape Town City, scheduled for Saturday, 4 December at 18:00. At least 31 employees have tested positive for the virus and the Club has subsequently been obliged to instruct all players, members of the technical team and staff, who are deemed primary contacts, to quarantine as per official protocols.

Unfortunately, this is the only option available in the current situation and, as a responsible corporate citizen, Kaizer Chiefs upholds its duty to protect the lives of those around us – including others – and do our best to avoid an outbreak that might potentially affect the league and the country.

The match will likely be deemed a walkover for Cape Town City, with Kaizer Chiefs losing the match and all three points.

Amakhosi are said to have had only 13 players available for the match, which incredibly is deemed more than enough to play a match. The minimum number is seven!

Kaizer Chiefs’ next match is away against Golden Arrows on Wednesday, 8 December (19:30). It remains to be seen if they will be able to field a team for that match.

Mzansi has also seen a sharp spike in positive Covid-19 cases after the detection of the new variant, Omicron, a week ago.

Friday night’s most up to date count revealed the country had recorded 16 055 new cases – almost 4 000 more new cases than the day before.

Blitzboks book quarter-final clash against Kenya at Dubai Sevens

The Springbok Sevens team was too strong for Great Britain and won their Pool A decider 21-7 on Friday to finish unbeaten on the first day of the second HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series tournament in Dubai.

Their third win of the day booked the Blitzboks a date with Kenya in Saturday’s quarter-final action, which will kick off at 08:50 (SA time) in The Sevens Stadium.

On a dramatic day which saw double Olympic champions Fiji miss out on the Cup quarter-finals for only the second time in World Series history, South Africa extended their record winning streak to 21 matches.

Blitzbok coach Neil Powell said afterwards that although his side played well on attack, they somehow could not get into their full stride.

“Maybe that was due to our form of last weekend, with the teams coming out to throw everything at you,” said Powell.

Powell also pointed to some missed opportunities, such as a forward pass just before half-time against Ireland and their failure to score against Great Britain when their opponents had a man in the sin bin.

Powell was, however, encouraged by their defensive effort: “I think we really worked hard on our defensive system, although there are still some room for improvement.”

Regarding Saturday’s quarter-final against Kenya in the knockout stages, Powell said: “An African derby will always be a physical one, so we have to make sure we make our tackles – we will have to make those one-on-ones stick.”

Against Great Britain, South Africa scored three converted tries through Zain Davids, Shilton van Wyk and Ronald Brown, while Branco du Preez (2) and Brown added the conversions. Alex Davis scored the only British try while Robbie Fergusson slotted the extras.

Blitzboks scored eight tries against Japan

In their first match of the day, the Springbok Sevens scored eight tries in their 48-0 victory over Japan to start their quest for a second tournament win in two weeks. Interestingly, all of the eight tries were scored by a different player, with the Blitzboks scoring 24 unanswered points in each half.

Impi Visser, JC Pretorius, Shilton van Wyk and Siviwe Soyizwapi all got onto the scoresheet after an almost flawless first half, denying Japan any decent scoring chance. The second half was equally impressive, with Zain Davids, Selvyn Davids, Ronald Brown and Shaun Williams each crossing the whitewash for a comfortable win.

The Irish were rewarded for their determination when Aaron O’Sullivan crashed over in the left corner for a consolation converted try.

GAME 1: Springbok Sevens 48 (24) Japan 0

Jurgen Klopp says ‘intense’ Diogo Jota is perfect fit for Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp says Diogo Jota’s intensity made him stand out as an ideal Liverpool player before the Portugal forward even moved to Anfield.

Jota first caught Klopp’s attention with his work-rate and intelligence while playing for Wolves against Liverpool in the FA Cup in 2018.

Less than two years later, Klopp paid £41 million ($54 million) to sign Jota in a deal that already looks a bargain.

“I remember the first time I saw him I thought he could be a player for me because of how intense he was in all situations,” Klopp said on Friday.

“Technically he was on a really high level but the intensity he puts in makes all the difference as at our level all players have technical quality.

“You make a difference with your attitude and that was what I was most excited about adding Diogo to the mix.”

Deputising for the injured Roberto Firmino, Jota has scored four goals in his past three matches, including one in Wednesday’s Merseyside derby at Everton.

The 24-year-old has nine goals in all competitions this season, silencing the critics who said he did not score enough at Wolves.

“People said he didn’t score an awful lot of goals but the problem is Wolves had the most intense style of play for offensive wingers,” Klopp said ahead of Jota’s return to Molineux to face his old club on Saturday.

“Raul Jimenez was allowed to stay up but the rest had to cover the whole pitch and it costs you energy. And he was very young then.

“All that made it very interesting for us and it was clear he would make the next steps with us. What I didn’t know when I saw him first is Diogo is an incredible package.”

Jota not the only red-hot Liverpool forward this season

Mohamed Salah, once criticised for being too selfish on the pitch, has provided eight assists in 14 league games to go with his 13 league goals.

Praising Salah’s development, Klopp denied he had spoken to the Egypt star in an effort to make him more of a team player.

“It’s not a coincidence but we didn’t have a specific talk about that as these things happen naturally,” said the Liverpool boss, whose side are third in the table, two points behind leaders Chelsea.

“He was never criticised by us for being too selfish because he never was. For a striker who comes in situations where we want him to finish off and from time to time oversees a mate who is maybe in a better position is completely normal.

“What helps a lot is experience, being in similar situations for plenty of times that you know what happens when we are there.”

WATCH | Cristiano Ronaldo scores record 800th goal – does a SIUUU!

Michael Carrick exited Manchester United with a win as Cristiano Ronaldo surpassed 800 goals for club and country with a double to see off Arsenal 3-2 on Thursday.

Carrick was taking charge for the final time as caretaker manager with new interim boss Ralf Rangnick watching from the stands and announced after the match he will leave the club rather than return to his coaching role.

The former Manchester United midfielder was part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s coaching staff and had been criticised by former team-mate Paul Scholes for remaining at the club following the Norwegian’s dismissal.

“It’s 100% my decision,” said Carrick.

“I thought it was the right thing to do for the club and for Ralf and I’m quite happy with that.

“We were in a situation where there was a responsibility to see these games through. The loyalty to Ole is a little bit of a factor but there were a lot of things that came into my decision.”

A vital three points means Rangnick will take over with Manchester United just three points off the Premier League top four and with an enticing run of fixtures to come over the festive period.

Victory also rounded off a fine stint for Carrick as caretaker after progress to the Champions League last 16 and a creditable 1-1 draw at Premier League leaders Chelsea.

Manchester United fans paid homage to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

The United fans paid homage to Solskjaer with a banner in the first match at Old Trafford since he was dismissed.

However, once the action got underway, nothing seemed to have changed from the final days of the his reign as United started in a similar fashion to humiliating home defeats to Liverpool and Manchester City.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Ben White had chances for the visitors inside the first two minutes.

When Arsenal did go in front on 13 minutes it was in strange fashion.

Emile Smith Rowe’s shot bounced into an unguarded net with David De Gea down injured having been stood on by his own player Fred.

Referee Martin Atkinson blew the whistle to stop play, but only after the ball had crossed the line and therefore the goal had to stand.

Arsenal players rebuffed Manchester United’s request to stand aside and allow them to equalise in a gesture of fair play.

But they did so of their own accord a minute before half-time when Jadon Sancho and Fred combined to tee up Fernandes to slot home his first goal since September.

Cristiano Ronaldo was dropped to the bench by Carrick at Stamford Bridge on Sunday amid suggestions that may become a more common occurrence under Rangnick’s high-energy style.

Accommodating the 36-year-old has been one of the causes of United’s decline defensively this season.

Cristiano Ronaldo has now scored 12 goals in 17 matches

But Ronaldo has kept his end of the bargain with 12 goals in 17 games since returning for a second spell with the Red Devils.

He coolly slotted home Marcus Rashford’s cross, but United’s lead lasted just two minutes as Arsenal responded with almost a carbon copy equaliser.

This time Gabriel Martinelli was the provider for Odegaard to steer into the far corner.

“We had some really good moments and when you score two goals you expect to get something from the game, but it is our own fault,” said Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta.

“We deserve much more than we got but you get punished against this quality of players.”

On the night he reached another remarkable personal milestone, the stage was set for Ronaldo to breathe new life into United’s season when Fred was chopped down inside the box by Odegaard 20 minutes from time.

Fernandes blasted over when he retained penalty duties against Aston Villa earlier in the season.

Incredible goal tally

This time he stood aside for his international team-mate, who smashed the ball high past Ramsdale for his 130th United goal across two spells.

Cristiano Ronaldo also scored 450 goals for Real Madrid, 101 at Juventus, five for Sporting Lisbon and is the record goalscorer in international football with 115 for Portugal.
