Stage 2 Load shedding: Weekend schedules for CPT, PTA, JHB & DBN

South Africans have now woken up to stage 2 load shedding on Saturday, 6 November 2021, which officially kicked in at 05:00. This is before stage 4 of the rolling blackouts was enforced from 14:00 on Friday, something Eskom had attributed to problems at its power stations – three units at the Kendal power station were taken offline and a unit each tripped at Tutuka and Matimba (the return to service of a unit each at these two stations had also been delayed)

Now stage 2 of the power outages is expected to continue at least until Monday at 05:00, but there’s no word from Eskom as to whether we should brace ourselves for more load shedding in the week (or weeks) to come.

IMF reaches staff agreement with Kenya in step towards $264 mln disbursement

The International Monetary Fund said on Friday it reached a staff level agreement with Kenya on a second review of IMF loan arrangements that would release about $264 million to the east African country upon Executive Board approval in coming weeks.

If approved, the disbursement would bring total IMF financial support for Kenya to $984 million for 2021.

“Kenya’s economic rebound continues and the COVID-19 vaccination programme has ramped up,” IMF Kenya mission chief Mary Goodman said in a statement, adding that the pandemic dealt a setback to Kenya’s sustainable development goals.

“New challenges include drought in the northern regions of the country and emerging security needs. Energy prices are rising in tandem with world oil prices which, along with higher food prices, has pushed up overall inflation even as core inflation has remained stable,” Goodman said.

The review of Kenya’s Extended Fund Facility and Extended Credit Facility programs found that Kenyan authorities had remained committed to their economic reform program, the IMF said.

Kenya had outperformed on its fiscal targets for the 2020/21 fiscal year, and tax revenue has been recovering so far in fiscal 2021/22.

“The IMF team shared the authorities’ assessment that some space is needed in FY21/22 for emergency spending to face the drought in the north of the country and meet emerging security needs,” Goodman said.

Djokovic, Medvedev and Zverev reach Paris semis

Novak Djokovic stayed on course for a sixth Paris Masters title with 6-4 6-3 win over American Taylor Fritz while world number two Daniil Medvedev tamed home crowd favourite Hugo Gaston 7-6 (7) 6-4 to reach the semi-finals on Friday.

Alexander Zverev made sure three of the world’s top four will compete in the last four after he toppled Casper Ruud 7-5 6-4 while Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz dug deep to beat Australian James Duckworth 6-2 6-7 (4) 7-5.

On Saturday Djokovic will meet Hurkacz while Medvedev will lock horns with Zverev in a mouth-watering clash for berths in Sunday’s final.

Djokovic and Fritz traded fierce ground strokes in the first set before the 20-times major winner broke serve at 3-4.

Fritz broke back immediately but Djokovic’s supremacy from the back of the court finally told as he clinched the opener in 38 minutes.

“I was absent from the Tour for two months, coming into this tournament, and the last competitive match I played was in the US Open final, compared to the other guys playing one or two events prior to Paris,” said Djokovic, who lost to Medvedev in the final at Flushing Meadows.

“I knew that I needed to start well, with good intensity and put in a lot of hours on the practice court. But it’s different when you play points in a competitive match.”

The pair again exchanged service breaks at the start of the second before Fritz blew a chance at 1-1 with Djokovic down 15-40. The Serb seized control after overcoming that minor blip, winning 12 of 14 points from 2-2 to register his fifth straight win over the 24-year-old American.

“I did have ups and downs. I am not really pleased with the way I closed out the sets. I lost my serve to love (at 1-1), then (at) 5-3, again, I served for it with new balls and lost to love again. Those things shouldn’t happen,” added Djokovic.

Medvedev double-faulted to hand Gaston a 5-4 lead in a knife-edged opening set and then saved three successive set points on the Frenchman’s serve to force a tiebreak as the next two games went with serve.

More spectacular shots and nerve-jangling action followed as Gaston saved a set point with a delicious backhand winner before Medvedev eventually clinched the hour-long set with a service winner which silenced vocal home fans in Paris.

The Russian raced into a 4-0 lead in the second set but 21-year old Gaston, who rallied from a 5-0 second-set deficit to beat Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz in the previous round, won the next three games and got the crowd back on their feet.

Medvedev held his nerve though and sealed the pulsating contest with a forehand crosscourt winner in a jittery final game in which he double-faulted on his first match point.

Zverev was in cruise control against Ruud after breaking the Norwegian’s serve in the 11th game of the opening set, holding his own throughout to book his last-four berth.

UN Security Council calls for end to Ethiopia conflict

The UN Security Council on Friday called for an end to the fighting in Ethiopia and for talks on a lasting ceasefire as the 15-member body expressed deep concern in a rare statement about the expansion and intensification of military clashes.

The council also “called for refraining from inflammatory hate speech and incitement to violence and divisiveness.”

It had been negotiating a statement for several days and eventually reached a compromise with Russia on the text, diplomats said.

Such statements have to be agreed by consensus.

Russia and China have long made clear they believe the year-long conflict, which started in the northern region of Tigray, is an internal affair for Ethiopia.

Both countries are council veto-powers – along with the United States, Britain and France – so any strong council action, like sanctions, is unlikely.

The war, which has killed thousands of people and forced more than two million from their homes, has intensified in recent weeks.

With rebels threatening to move on the capital Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian army on Friday called on former troops to rejoin to fight them, state media said.

A planned Security Council meeting on Ethiopia on Friday was postponed until Monday, said Mexico’s UN Ambassador Juan Ramón de la Fuente Ramírez, council president for November.

The statement on Ethiopia – drafted by Ireland, Kenya, Niger, Tunisia and St Vincent and the Grenadines – was only the second by the Security Council in the past year.

“Today the Security Council breaks six months of silence and speaks again with one united voice on the deeply concerning situation in Ethiopia,” Ireland’s UN Ambassador Geraldine Byrne Nason said in a statement.

“For the first time, the council clearly calls for a cessation of hostilities. We believe this should happen immediately, and that all civilians must be protected,” she said.

The United Nations has said that up to 7 million people in the Ethiopian regions of Tigray, Amhara and Afar need help, including 5 million in Tigray where some 400 000 people are estimated to be living in famine-like conditions.

The Security Council “called for the respect of international humanitarian law, for safe and unhindered humanitarian access, the re-establishment of public services, and further urged the scaling up of humanitarian assistance.”
