Local ELECTIONS: Just 52% of KZN voters go to the polls

Local government elections were peaceful, free and fair across KwaZulu-Natal, KZN Premier Sihle Zikalala said on Tuesday.

Zikalala congratulated voters in the province for their role in what he described as peaceful, free and fair local government elections.

“Millions of eligible voters went to the polls on Monday, 1 November in the country’s local government elections to choose councillors for the next five years. On Tuesday, as early stage voting continued, a concerning picture was beginning to emerge indicating clearly that many voters had decided not to cast their vote,” Zikalala said.

This election year marks 21 years of local government in South Africa and 28 years since the country’s first democratic elections in 1994.

Some 26,221,853 million voters are registered to vote in SA, 5,467,329 million of which are located in KZN.

Based on this count the Independent Electoral Commission said that out of the country’s estimated 40 million eligible voters, an estimated 13 million had decided not to register to vote.

“As predicted, preliminary figures show a significant drop in overall voter turn-out. This year 52% of KwaZulu-Natal voters went to the polls compared to the 2016 number of 61%. This year’s figures point to a 10% decline but it gives hope that with more intensive engagement of the voters, that decline can be halted,” Zikalala said.

He said KZN was one of only three provinces which together with the Western Cape and Northern Cape breached the 50% response of registered voters who made their mark yesterday.

“Going forward it is clear we will require greater focus on young people who are first time voters to remind them that they have a stake in the future of this country. As leaders it is our duty to help reverse this trend of non-voting and to encourage voters to exercise this right which is central to consolidating the democratic gains,” he said.

Premier urges parties and candidates to accept election results

Zikalala thanked the voters and police for ensuring a peaceful election.

“We take this opportunity to thank the voters in KwaZulu-Natal who came out to vote to express this hard-earned democratic right. In particular, we convey our gratitude to all the communities of KwaZulu-Natal for displaying maturity and for allowing all political parties and independents to display their posters and to campaign freely,” he said.

“Apart from reported isolated incidents we are pleased that political parties engaged robustly but with respect for each other in what has been a mature contest for the soul of the voter,” Zikalala added.

Zikalala appealed to citizens, political parties and their candidates to accept the final results as the product of a democratic, free and fair process.

“Once the results are finalised we will start setting up councils. We call on the people of KwaZulu-Natal to support these structures and for the next five years to work closely with all our elected representatives to support the delivery of basic services,” he said.

“We would also pay our tribute to the IEC for rolling out its world class election machinery to conduct an election that we can all be proud of. The IECs integrity remains uncontested as an independent election agency that is centred on our Constitutional values,” he said.

BOSASA LATEST: Court to obtain independent medical report on Agrizzi

The State has called for an independent medical report on the health condition of  the more than R800 000 fraud accused, BOSASA former Chief Operations Officer, Angelo Agrizzi,  who has skipped court for the past nine months due to ill health.

Investigating Directorate spokesperson, Sindisiwe Seboka, said Agrizzi’ s more than R800 000 fraud case had been postponed to 2 December in the Palm Ridge Specialised Crimes Court. She said this was after Agrizzi had failed to appear before court for more than  9 months, citing ill health.

“The court has issued a warrant for his arrest, stayed until the next appearance next month. The court, through the state’s request, will acquire the services of an independent physician/ pulmonologist,” Seboka said.

Agrizzi stands accused of offering gratification on behalf of BOSASA to former Parliamentarian Vincent Smith in exchange for his influence, as the then chairperson of Parliament’s oversight committee on Correctional Services.

BOSASA scored contracts totalling just over R1 billion from Correctional Services between 2004 and 2007.

Meanwhile, tax evasion charges of more than R28 million have been added to the case against Smith, which was this week postponed to 21 January, 2022.

“The defence requested the state to provide them with a paginated docket after the final indictment was provided to them today. The charges now include tax fraud, money laundering, corruption and breach of the Financial Intelligence Centre Act,” Seboka said. The tax fraud charges stem from Smith and Euroblitz’s alleged failure to disclose taxable income totalling R28 Million between 09 March 2009 and 11 July 2018.

Smith stands accused in his personal capacity as well as in a representative capacity for his company Euroblitz 48 Pty Ltd. He has been charged of corruption for the alleged gratifications he received from BOSASA in the form of security upgrades to his Gauteng home. He further faces corruption charges after he allegedly accepted gratifications from Waterfall Golf Estate (Pty) Ltd and CLIDET 69 (PTY) LTD.

He also faces charges for accepting cash transferred into his personal bank account and his company from BOSASA and other people unknown to the state.

In addition, he faces fraud charges for failing to disclose to parliaments Register of Members’ Interest of the gratifications, cash deposits and money that was paid to him by Waterfall Golf Estate (Pty) Ltd and CLIDET 69 (PTY) LTD.

Alun Wyn Jones OUT of Springboks Test – CONFIRMED

As first reported by The South African website, Wales captain Alun Wyn Jones will miss next weekend’s Test against the Springboks with a shoulder injury that requires surgery which may sideline him for “months”, the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) said on Tuesday.

Both Jones and flanker Ross Moriarty will require operations after they each suffered shoulder injuries as Wales were thrashed 54-16 by New Zealand in Cardiff last weekend.

Their absence represents a huge double blow to Wales, who are at home to world champions South Africa on Saturday ahead of Principality Stadium matches against Australia and Fiji later this month.

Both forwards could also yet miss the start of Six Nations champions’ Wales title defence away to Ireland on February 5.

Jones, by playing in his 149th Test for Wales last week, surpassed retired New Zealand captain Richie McCaw’s previous world record of most Test rugby union appearances for one country.

But he left the field after just 19 minutes following a tackle on All Blacks fullback Jordie Barrett.

Moriarty then went off following a tackle by All Blacks forwards Nepo Laulala and Ethan Blackadder, with French referee Mathieu Raynal showing a yellow card to Laulala.

Jones also injured his left shoulder a mere eight minutes into the British and Irish Lions warm-up Test against Japan at Murrayfield in June.

However, the second row was back after just 18 days to lead the combined side during their 2-1 series loss in South Africa.

But Tuesday’s statement from the WRU offered no hope of an equally quick recovery.

EXPLAINER | HOW THE SPRINGBOKS CAN REGAIN THE NO 1 RANKING ON SATURDAY

“Wales captain Alun Wyn Jones and back row Ross Moriarty underwent scans yesterday (Monday) due to shoulder injuries sustained on Saturday, in the game against New Zealand,” the WRU said.

“The scans revealed that neither Jones nor Moriarty will be able to participate further in the Autumn Nations Series, and will therefore be released from the squad.

“Both players will require surgery with an estimated recovery period of a number of months respectively.”

The WRU added No 8 Taulupe Faletau had been released from the squad because of an ankle injury suffered during training at Bath, his English club.

Faletau, set to join Cardiff next season, only linked up with the Wales squad on Monday.

Meanwhile, Cardiff flanker Shane Lewis-Hughes and uncapped Ospreys forward Rhys Davies have now been called up by Wales.

Cardiff centre Willis Halaholo is set to re-join the Wales squad on Friday following 10 days in isolation after he tested positive for Covid-19.

Wales coach Wayne Pivac, who was without 20 players last week due to injury, illness and the fact the All Blacks game took place outside the Test window, is due to name his side to play the Springboks on Thursday.

SA election results: Who were the big winners – and losers – on Tuesday?

Tuesday marked the first full day of vote-counting in the 2021 Local Elections, with the IEC tallying up 58% of the ballots by 23:00. The process is expected to finish tomorrow, and the Commission will announce the final results on Thursday 4 November – it’s fair to say some parties will be much, much happier than others.

2021 Local Election results: Plenty left to play for…

It has been a tumultuous time for the more established parties in South Africa, and some smaller organizations have benefitted from a shift in voting patterns. A low voter turnout has also skewed the picture somewhat.

Nonetheless, those who chose to exercise their democratic rights have spoken. We’ve taken a quick look at the real ‘winners and losers’ of the day, with two clear camps emerging late on Tuesday evening.

Who’s come out on top? Latest election results and updates for South Africa

For the second election in a row, it’s tough to ignore the progress made by the FF Plus. The party may be limited in terms of what it can achieve in South Africa, but they are successfully convincing more Afrikaner voters to join the cause. In fact, there’s evidence that the outsiders are sweeping up citizens who have turned their backs on the DA.

A strong performance in Tshwane, a respectable showing in Mpumalanga, and even the FF Plus’ first-ever ward win in the Western Cape have put a spring in the step of Pieter Groenewald’s party. Meanwhile, the IFP also took some significant strides forward, claiming almost a quarter of all votes in KwaZulu-Natal so far.

The IFP is in pole position to take control of more than a dozen municipalities in KZN, too. Elsewhere, the Patriotic Alliance emerged as kingmakers in several Western Cape districts, and ActionSA has primed itself for a similar role in Johannesburg. The EFF made marginal gains, but their performance on Tuesday wasn’t above par.

Tough day at the office for ANC, DA

Now, the ones who didn’t so well: You don’t have to look any further than the ANC. The ruling party is on course for its worst-ever election result, and they are projected to dip below 50% of the national vote. Their ballot share has been decimated in KZN, and they face an uphill battle to retain control in Joburg and Ekurhuleni.

The DA has also seen a substantial dip in their support compared to 2016. They won some very important municipalities today – including a first-ever victory in KZN – but their vote share in both Cape Town and the Western Cape has decreased. Somewhat ironically, the top two parties in SA are the ones who have struggled the most.
