Top-ranked and favourites Blitzboks play the underdog card

The Springbok Sevens team must focus on their own efforts and not worry about the opposition when they start their 2021 World Rugby Sevens Series campaign in Vancouver this weekend.

That was the word from Blitzboks coach Neil Powell as his team start the HSBC Canada Sevens tournament with matches against Mexico, Spain and Kenya on Saturday.

The South Africans are ranked first in the tournament, consisting of 12 teams, with a number of regulars on the World Series, such as New Zealand, Australia, Fiji and Argentina, not involved this weekend.

For Powell, the focus will be on the effort from his own players, rather than the opposition they play.

“Although we are first ranked, we are not the favourites,” said Powell.

“There are so many changes in all the squads, and everyone will be at different levels of preparation as well. There will be no form line to guide anyone at this tournament and is it therefore very important for us to focus on our standards. We need to make sure we bring the effort and keep the focus on ourselves.”

The Blitzboks will have four uncapped players – Christie Grobbelaar, Ronald Brown, Shaun Williams and Darren Adonis – representing them in the World Series for the first time and Powell welcomed their presence.

“A lot of the teams here are in the same situation, with players moving on after the Olympics and will have squads that have a mix of new players and regular players on the circuit,” he said.

“For the new guys in our squad this will be a huge opportunity. They have been in our system for a while now and it is their time to step up and show they can play against international competition.”

Reflecting on their opponents on the first day, the coach was adamant that they will not underestimate any of their rivals, especially Mexico, who are one of the invitational teams in Canada.

“That is an easy trap to fall into, but we are mindful of that,” said Powell.

“We have not seen much of Mexico, but they did play in that repechage tournament before the Olympics. We need to lay a good foundation for day one and that first match is always the best place to start, so we will approach that match in that way.”

Spain and Kenya are regulars in the World Series and known opponents to the Blitzboks.

“Spain, as we know, are a team that can surprise you on the day – they have actually beaten New Zealand here in Vancouver in the past, so it will be a challenging game,” warned Powell.

“They come off their line very fast and make it tough to score tries against them. We will have to be prepared for what they will bring.

“Kenya will have one of the most experienced squads here and as always it will be very physical against them,” Powell added.

Physicality is an aspect Angelo Davids will enjoy. The 22-year-old winger – who has a healthy strike rate of 18 tries in 32 matches – is also being used at hooker by the Blitzboks, and he does not mind being moved to the forwards on occasion.

“When you play in the forwards, the physical demands are greater, no doubt,” said Davids.

“But I enjoy that part of the game, so I don’t mind being moved to hooker when the team need me to play there. I like the physical stuff. Luckily for me, there are some experienced forwards in the squad, and they help me out immediately if there are any issues at scrums or the lineouts.”

It was not too long away ago – six tournaments in fact – when Davids himself was handed his very first match jersey.

“The new guys bring lots of energy and that is always good for the team,” he said.

“I can only tell them what coach Neil told me on debut – go out there and enjoy. Express yourself and do not worry about making mistakes, the other guys will look after you.”

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Manchester United return ups scrutiny on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Manchester United’s shock Champions League defeat to Swiss champions Young Boys has already ratcheted up the pressure on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer despite an impressive start to the Premier League season.

QUIZ | ANSWER 5 EASY SOCCER QUESTIONS AND YOU COULD WIN R1 000 IN DATA!

A star-studded side including Cristiano Ronaldo plus £100 million-worth of new signings in Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho slipped to an embarrassing 2-1 loss in Bern.

United took the lead in Tuesday’s opening Group F encounter in Switzerland but plans went awry after the dismissal of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, with Jesse Lingard’s errant back-pass gifting the hosts a winner in time added on.

Despite individual errors from his men it was Solskjaer left in the firing line, with his in-game management once more coming under the microscope.

Ronaldo has hit the ground running since his return to the club from Juventus, scoring three goals in two games.

But the fanfare surrounding the five-time Ballon d’Or winner also brings greater scrutiny on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in what was always likely to be a defining season for the Norwegian.

The 48-year-old manager was handed a new three-year contract in July, reward for the progress United have made in the three years since he replaced Jose Mourinho.

United finished second in the Premier League last season and qualified for the Champions League for a second consecutive season for just the second time since Alex Ferguson stepped down in 2013.

But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – who won multiple trophies during his time as a player at Old Trafford – is yet to win silverware as United manager despite several near-misses.

Given the talent now at his disposal even a League Cup or FA Cup win might not be enough to save his job if United do not mount a serious challenge for the Premier League or Champions League.

Former United striker Louis Saha said the club could “afford” the defeat in Switzerland because they have a chance to recover but he believes Solskjaer will have less room for manoeuvre this season because of the strength of his squad.

“I do think that he will be questioned faster because the team doesn’t have any weaknesses,” he said.

“For me, it is a very strong side.”

The Red Devils begin the weekend on top of the Premier League with 10 points from their opening four games, with a potentially tricky trip to West Ham on Sunday.

But some of the same flaws evident in midweek have also been on display in league games against Southampton, Wolves and Newcastle, only for United to be bailed out by their array of attacking talent.

Despite their three wins, the team have lacked cohesion and have struggled to gain control of games, relying on moments of isolated magic from players such as Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba.

Solskjaer has the unenviable task of striking a balance between defence and attack while keeping all his star names happy.

Marcus Rashford and Edinson Cavani are yet to feature this season due to injury, but will soon be competing for places with Ronaldo, Sancho, Mason Greenwood, Anthony Martial, Jesse Lingard, Donny van de Beek and Juan Mata.

Behind them, Fernandes and Pogba have started the season in fine form, but their compatibility in a midfield three against stronger opposition is still up for debate.

“We’ve got goals, I know that, it’s about striking a balance in the rest of the set-up,” said Solskjaer after Newcastle made Ronaldo’s homecoming last weekend far trickier than the 4-1 scoreline suggests.

His attempts to find that balance in Switzerland were made tougher by Wan-Bissaka’s dismissal but he drew criticism over his use of substitutes and tactics.

Solskjaer faced questions afterwards over why he took Ronaldo off at all and also over why he did not remove the 36-year-old earlier – showing how difficult it will be to keep everybody happy.

The only way to quieten the noise is by getting back to winning ways, starting at the London Stadium on Sunday.

All necessary measures in place to ensure a smooth voters’ registration process: IEC in North West

IEC

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in the North West says it has put all necessary measures in place to ensure a smooth voters’ registration process. Over 1 740 stations will be operating this weekend in the province with more than 4000 staff members.

IEC Provincial Electoral Officer, Dr Tumelontle Thiba, says they will mostly target young people during the voters’ registration drive.

“Our staff members that has been trained are close to 4000 for the 1 743 voting stations that we are opening. So we are confident that we are ready. We would like to have as many young people as possible registering voters that is. We also would like for voters who already on the voters roll to come and update their details particularly the addresses where these are missing.”

Dr Thiba says although some parts of the province have been experiencing violent protests, they don’t expect any disruptions.

“I really don’t expect citizens in this province to disrupt IEC work. We have had a problem in Rustenburg last Friday of disgruntled purported ANC (African National Congress) members holding our staff hostage. Fortunately, there was a response from law enforcement officers. We hope that there will not be a repeat of that case. It is very important that given the constraints of time we register voters,” says Dr Thiba.

IEC urges South Africans to come out in large numbers and take advantage of this weekend’s voter registration:

Over 1000 voting stations to be opened in the Western Cape

A total of 1 577 voting stations will be open across the Western Cape during this weekend’s final voter registration weekend. The Electoral Commission in the province says of these, 38 are temporary sites where there are no permanent structures available. Residents can also register to vote online.

Provincial Electoral Officer Michael Hendrickse, says voting stations will be open for registrations across the province from 8 am on Saturday until 5pm on Saturday and Sunday.

“For the registration weekend, we have recruited and trained 3290 registration staff and in addition for the preparation of this registration weekend as well as for the preparation and delivery of our elections that will take place in November.  We have also contracted additional staff on short term contracts.”

Meanwhile, Home Affairs offices throughout the country will be opened this weekend to assist those who will be applying for identity documents, including temporary, ones to enable them to register to vote.

Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi made the announcement in a media briefing on Friday. Assistance will also be given to those who want to collect their identity documents.
