All necessary measures in place to ensure a smooth voters’ registration process: IEC in North West

IEC

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in the North West says it has put all necessary measures in place to ensure a smooth voters’ registration process. Over 1 740 stations will be operating this weekend in the province with more than 4000 staff members.

IEC Provincial Electoral Officer, Dr Tumelontle Thiba, says they will mostly target young people during the voters’ registration drive.

“Our staff members that has been trained are close to 4000 for the 1 743 voting stations that we are opening. So we are confident that we are ready. We would like to have as many young people as possible registering voters that is. We also would like for voters who already on the voters roll to come and update their details particularly the addresses where these are missing.”

Dr Thiba says although some parts of the province have been experiencing violent protests, they don’t expect any disruptions.

“I really don’t expect citizens in this province to disrupt IEC work. We have had a problem in Rustenburg last Friday of disgruntled purported ANC (African National Congress) members holding our staff hostage. Fortunately, there was a response from law enforcement officers. We hope that there will not be a repeat of that case. It is very important that given the constraints of time we register voters,” says Dr Thiba.

IEC urges South Africans to come out in large numbers and take advantage of this weekend’s voter registration:

Over 1000 voting stations to be opened in the Western Cape

A total of 1 577 voting stations will be open across the Western Cape during this weekend’s final voter registration weekend. The Electoral Commission in the province says of these, 38 are temporary sites where there are no permanent structures available. Residents can also register to vote online.

Provincial Electoral Officer Michael Hendrickse, says voting stations will be open for registrations across the province from 8 am on Saturday until 5pm on Saturday and Sunday.

“For the registration weekend, we have recruited and trained 3290 registration staff and in addition for the preparation of this registration weekend as well as for the preparation and delivery of our elections that will take place in November.  We have also contracted additional staff on short term contracts.”

Meanwhile, Home Affairs offices throughout the country will be opened this weekend to assist those who will be applying for identity documents, including temporary, ones to enable them to register to vote.

Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi made the announcement in a media briefing on Friday. Assistance will also be given to those who want to collect their identity documents.

He is stable one day, unstable the next - says Manoj Bajpayee on his father's health

Manoj also spoke about the final futility of all ambitions. “Death is the final truth, the rest…everything else is just irrelevant.” As he keeps a constant vigil on his father’s health, Manoj hopes for a recovery.

In June, Manoj Bajpayee had hurriedly left Mumbai for his native village Belwa in the Bettiah district of Bihar to meet his ailing father. Manoj’s wife and daughter had also accompanied him. Says Manoj, “I  am very close to both my parents. They named me after their favourite actor Manoj Kumar. My father had to struggle to put my siblings and I  through our basic education. From my childhood, I dreamt of being an actor. My father supported me in my dream. That’s how a boy from Bettiah with no connections in the  film industry dared to venture into cinema.”

Algeria’s former President Bouteflika dies at 84

Former Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika has died at 84, the presidency said on Friday, more than two years after he stepped down under pressure from mass protests and the army.

Bouteflika, a veteran of Algeria’s war for independence, had ruled the North African country for two decades before his resignation in April 2019 after street demonstrations rejecting his plan to seek a fifth term.

He had rarely been seen in public before his departure since a stroke in 2013.

After Bouteflika’s resignation, in a bid to end the protests demanding political and economic reforms, authorities launched unprecedented investigations into corruption, leading to the imprisonment of several senior officials, including Bouteflika’spowerful brother and advisor, Said. Said has been jailed for 15years on charges including plotting against the state.

After Algeria’s independence from France in 1962, former president Bouteflika became Algeria’s first foreign minister and an influential figure in the Non-Aligned Movement that gave a global voice to Africa, Asia and Latin America.

As a president of the U.N. General Assembly, Bouteflikainvited former Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat to address the body in 1974, a historic step toward international recognition of the Palestinian cause.

He also demanded that China be given a seat in the UnitedNations, and railed against apartheid rule in South Africa.

He championed post-colonial states, challenged what he saw as the hegemony of the United States and helped his country into a seed-bed of 1960s idealism.

He also welcomed Che Guevara, and a young Nelson Mandela got his first training in Algeria. Black Panther Eldridge Cleaver, on the run from U.S. police, was given refuge.

In the early 1980s, Bouteflika went into exile after the death of ex-President Houari Boumediene and settled in Dubai, where he became an adviser to a member of the emirate’s ruling family.

He returned home in the 1990s when Algeria was being ravaged by a war between the army and armed Islamist militants that killed at least 200,000 people.

Elected president in 1999, he managed to negotiate a truce with Islamists and launched a national reconciliation process allowing the country to restore peace.

Bouteflika joined the independence war against France at the age of 19 as a protege of commander Boumediene, who became president in 1965.

After independence, Bouteflika became minister of youth and tourism at the age of 25. The following year he was made foreign minister.

Little is known about his private life, official records mention no wife, though some accounts say a marriage took place in 1990. For years Bouteflika lived with his mother, Mansouriah,in an apartment in Algiers, where she used to prepare his meals.

Bouteflika had used oil and gas revenues to soothe internal discontent, and the state he ruled became more peaceful and prosperous, allowing it to sidestep, for a while, the “Arab Spring” unrest that toppled leaders across the region in 2011.

But corruption flourished and Algerians grew increasingly angry at the political and economic torpor, fuelling the mass protests that finally brought Bouteflika’s presidency to an end.

Teen undergoes surgery after USB cable gets stuck in penis [PICS]

A teenage boy in the United Kingdom (UK) had to undergo surgery after inserting a USB cable into his penis for a wild “sexual experimentation.”

According to a study published in the medical journal Urology Case Reports, the 15-year-old decided to stick a knotted USB cable into his urethra “in the context of autoerotism.” The cable became lodged in his scrotum and despite efforts to remove it himself, he ended up with the two ports at each end hanging out the end of his penis.

The urethra is the tube in the penis that allows for urine to pass from the bladder to the exterior of the body during urination.

Well, it turns out this British teen found another use for it, although the situation didn’t end on such a positive note.

The boy’s family soon transported him to a local hospital after he began urinating blood. Doctors at the facility had no success in removing the USB cable from his penis and he was then transferred to University College Hospital London for further medical assistance.

UK teen inserted USB cable to measure penis

Perhaps another part of the story is why the teenager inserted the cable into his urethra in the first place – to measure the size of his penis.

“Following his request to be examined without his mother, he confessed that he inserted the cable into his urethra to measure the length of his penis triggered by sexual curiosity,” the study reads.

Doctors were able to eventually remove the USB cable. The boy managed to make a recovery and was discharged the next day.

“The knotted cable was revealed in the proximal aspect of the penile urethra and cut from the remainder of the cord. Both ends of the wire were pulled out successfully through the external urethral meatus,” the journal read in part.
