Police arrest three suspects recover R220 000 worth of cattle

Freestate police officers have arrested three suspects after an intense crime intelligence led investigation about planned livestock theft at a farm near Wesselsbron..

SAPS regional spokesperson Brigadier Motantsi Makhele said that a multiple disciplined joint investigation team had swooped on the suspects this week. This was after police had received a tip off about the plot to steal livestock from the local farm.

“A joint team comprising of Odendaalsrus Stock Theft and Endangered Species, Welkom Crime Intelligence, Smithfield Crime Intelligence, Welkom Public Order Policing Reaction Team and Rural Safety Coordinator of Wesselsbron was mobilised and a way-lay conducted on Thursday 16 September 2021,” Makhele said.

Makhele said police had waited in the area from around 1.20pm, not far from the farm that the suspects were expected to target near Wesselsbron.

“At about 5:45am members spotted a white Mercedes Benz Truck with cattle on board,” Makhele said.

He said the police officers had then approached the truck and three men immediately jumped out of the truck and rand towards a nearby field.

“Members gave chase and managed to arrest all (three) suspects who are aged between 33 and 35 years old,” Makhele said.

Makhele said police officers had then proceeded to search the suspects and three cellphones were found and seized.

A total of 11 stolen Bonsmara cattle, valued at around R220 000 were positively identified by the local farmer and handed back to him at the scene of the arrest, Makhele added.

“The suspects will  appear in Wesselsbron Magistrate Court on Monday the 20 September 2021,” he said.

According to the latest crime statistics released by Police Minister Bheki Cele in August stock theft is on the decline.

“Police continue to clamp down on Stock theft, which recorded a decrease of 8.0%. If comparison was made to the normal period of 2019/2020 this would have resulted in a 13.5% decrease,” Cele said.

Stock theft decreased in six of the nine provinces with the highest volume decrease recorded in the Eastern Cape that reported 398 fewer cases.

KZN hosted Intra-African Trade Fair to create 1 200 jobs

KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) is ready to host the 2021 Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF2021) which is set to inject hundreds of millions of rands into the province’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and to boost the tourism sector and create over 1000 jobs.

The event will be hosted in Durban from 15 to 21 November 2021 and is expected to attract direct spend of R235 million, contribute an estimated R600 million to the provincial GDP and create a total of 1200 jobs.

This was how Premier Sihle Zikalala outlined the economic impact of the event, during the signing of an agreement for the hosting of the IATF2021 at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre in Durban on Thursday.

“This is a welcome shot-in-the-arm for KwaZulu-Natal as we embark on resetting and growing our economy under the Economic Reconstruction and Transformation Plan. In its first edition held in Cairo in December 2018, the event attracted over 1000 exhibitors from 45 countries. This resulted in over US$32 billion worth of trade and investment deals closed at the event.  As of 31 January 2021, an amount of about US$ 27 billion has been implemented or is under implementation.  We look forward to welcoming the companies, exhibitors and country representatives to KZN,” Zikalala said.

The signing ceremony was attended by former Nigerian President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo in his capacity as Chairman of the Advisory Council of the IATF and the President of AfreximBank, Professor Bennedict Oramah.

Obasanjo said this year’s IATF in KZN would build on the successes of the 2018 IATF. Deals worth an estimated $40 billion are expected to be signed at this year’s event.

Obasanjo added that a lack of information was one of the inhibitors to inter-continental trade, as traders did not know what each country produced and needed.

“The trade fair is one of the practical ways of bridging the information gap,” he said.

Pro. Oramah said the Intra-African Trade Fair was key to reverse engineer the “colonial strategy” that had held Africa down for decades.

“The colonial strategy divided us, the trade fair is about breaking down borders and building bridges,” he said.

The KZN delegation led by Zikalala included MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs Ravi Pillay, MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development Bongi Sithole-Moloi, MEC for Health Nomagugu Simelane, MEC for Education Kwazi Mshengu and MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Sipho Hlomuka; eThekwini Mayor, Mxolisi Kaunda and KZN Director-General, Dr Nonhlanhla Mkhize.

Kaunda said eThekwini was ready to deliver a memorable Intra-African Trade Fair event.

“We are excited about this opportunity because it has a potential to boost our tourism industry which has been adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. We also have no doubt that this event will contribute significantly to the city’s revenue and create much-needed jobs, particularly in the hospitality sector which lost over R4 billion during the hard lockdown,” Kaunda added.
