Less than 3.5 % of Africans vaccinated against COVID-19: Africa CDC

Less than 3.5% of Africans are vaccinated against COVID-19, far short of its official target of 60%, Director of Africa’s Centers for Disease Control, John Nkengasong, said on Tuesday.

World Health Organization (WHO) head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said at the same briefing that the continent was being “left behind by the rest of the world” and that this would allow the coronavirus to keep circulating.

Meanwhile, African Union Special Envoy on COVID-19, Strive Masiyiwa said the continent is not relying on vaccine donations.

He says member states are prepared and able to pay for vaccines but are being denied access to the drugs due to export restrictions in several countries.

Masiyiwa was speaking during the weekly World Health Organisation briefing on COVID-19 in Geneva.

Orlando Pirates camp DIVIDED over who to listen to!

Orlando pirates are suffering from internal factions according to an insider at the club!

The Buccaneers got their first victory of the season over the weekend when they defeated Swallows FC 1 – 0 thanks to a Tshegofatso Mabasa header.

The win came at a difficult time for Orlando Pirates who were already sent crashing out of the MTN8 at the first hurdle as defending champions.

New suggestions from within the Buccaneers’ camp claim there’s major problems within the squad and loyalties towards the two co-coaches in Mandla Ncikazi and Fadlu Davids are becoming a challenge!

Orlando Pirates being disrupted by internal power struggle?

“People are not happy with what is happening in that squad, it’s a very talented squad but there is no unity.” a reported Orlando Pirates insider told Citizen.

“There are sub-groups inside the club with some players only wanting to take instructions from Fadlu, while others are on coach Mandla’s side. You see, that’s where the problem starts, there is no head coach, there is no-one who is in charge of everything. Even Thembinkosi Lorch spoke about the team being divided in that show on TV (Sitting with Stan).

“If you don’t get along with a certain player at Orlando Pirates, you don’t pass the ball to him, unless you’re under pressure. That’s what happens, you should look at the way the team plays, it is wrong for a big club like Pirates. I don’t know how it is going to be fixed, but it better be soon,”

Orlando Pirates will be competing both domestically as well as on the continent this season. The club’s fans will desperate for a more unified approach going forward.

The Buccaneers are next in action against Chippa United on Saturday afternoon. Kick-off is scheduled for 15:00.

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) have welcomed the 12-year prison sentence for tax fraud imposed on Georgina Chinwe Obiageri Nwanyanwu.

Nwanyanwu was found guilty of tax fraud for fraudulently claiming VAT returns from SARS.

Gavin Hunt was left disappointed with his side’s performance after they lost for the first time this season.

After an opening day victory against Sekhukhune United as well as holding the defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns to a draw, Chippa United’s loss against Royal AM meant the honeymoon phase is over for Gavin Hunt.

Gavin Hunt disappointed after Royal AM defeat

“It was really disappointing because we deserved more from the game but we couldn’t get what we wanted,” Chippa United head coach Gavin Hunt said as quoted by TimesLive

“For most of the game we played okay but obviously we lacked just a final ball in certain areas but we will keep grinding away. There’s lot to improve, but I think we deserved more than what we got from this game.

“I thought we really worked our socks off and I am proud of the players. I don’t know if it was a penalty I couldn’t see from where I was sitting. It was little bit harsh,”

Tunisian president rejects dialogue with ‘traitors’

Tunisia’s President Kais Saied said on Tuesday he would not do deals with those he described as”traitors”, an apparent reference to the moderate Islamist Ennahda party, the biggest in the suspended parliament.

Ennahda has called for a national dialogue to find a way forward after Saied on July 25 dismissed the prime minister, froze parliament and seized governing powers, moves the party has called a coup.

“I will not deal with.. traitors and those who pay money to offend their country. No dialogue with them,” he said in a video that was posted online by the presidency.

Local media have reported that Ennahda had paid a foreign lobbying company, something it denied doing.

“They paid nearly 3 million dinars to foreign lobbying groups to harm their country,” said Saied in the video, without naming Ennahda.

More than seven weeks after his intervention thrust Tunisia into its biggest political crisis since introducing democracy in a 2011 revolution that triggered the Arab Spring, Saied has yet to name a new prime minister or declare his future intentions.

Last week one of his advisers told Reuters he was planning to suspend the constitution and offer an amended version for a public referendum.

The powerful labour union UGTT rejected that approach the following day and Saied then said any amendments to the constitution must be made within the existing constitutional framework.

The union, as well as Ennahda, other political parties and Western democracies that have supported Tunisian public finances, have all urged him to quickly name a new government and to return to the constitutional order.

Saied, in his comments on Tuesday, said: “The government is important. But what is more important is how this government will work”.
