Stars born at US Open

The coronation of new champions Emma Raducanu and Daniil Medvedev left tennis fans salivating at the prospect of what is to come as the curtain dropped on Grand Slam tennis for another year at the end of the US Open on Sunday.

The fans were back at Billie Jean King National Tennis Center after last year’s COVID-19-enforced lockout and they witnessed drama worthy of any stage at the Broadway theatres only a few miles away.

Novak Djokovic had inevitably been given top billing because of his quest for a calendar-year Grand Slam and a 21st major title to break the three-way tie with Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal as the most successful men’s player of all time.

In the second week, however, he had to share the spotlight as two new tennis stars emerged in the women’s draw.

Teenagers Raducanu and Leylah Fernandez — born two months apart in 2002, generated frenzied hype as they swept all before them on unlikely runs to the title decider.

Raducanu, having battled her way through qualifying at only her second major, emerged triumphant in the final act on Saturday with a dominant victory that captivated millions back home in Britain and around the world.

The manner of her triumph, and the fact she had reached fourth round on Wimbledon grass on her Grand Slam debut, left many wondering if Raducanu might possibly be the dominant champion women’s tennis craves.

Canadian left-hander Fernandez had the harder route to the final, beating three top-five players and multiple major champions, and did more than enough to suggest she will not be a flash-in-the-pan.

“We’ve seen other careers that have looked unstoppable but haven’t lasted very long,” said ESPN analyst Chris Evert, herself a teenage Grand Slam winner.

Israeli Prime Minister visits Egypt in first official trip for a decade

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett met Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Monday for talks on Israeli-Palestinian relations and bilateral ties in the first official trip by an Israeli head of government to Egypt for a decade.

Bennett, the head of a far-right party who took office in June, was invited to visit by Sisi last month.

Since May, Egypt has played a prominent role in brokering and trying to reinforce a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip after 11 days of conflict there between Israel and Palestinian faction Hamas, which controls the enclave.

Bennett said the talks in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh covered diplomacy, security and the economy. “We created a foundation for a deep connection going forward,” he said before flying home.

In the discussions, Sisi cited Egypt’s efforts to maintain calm in the Palestinian territories and the importance of international support for rebuilding efforts there, according to an Egyptian presidency statement.

An uptick in cross-border violence since late August has tested the fragile truce in Gaza. Over the past week, Palestinians have fired rockets into Israel for three nights in a row, drawing Israeli airstrikes.

Sisi also “affirmed Egypt’s support for all efforts to achieve a comprehensive peace in the Middle East, according to the two-state solution”, the presidency statement said.

Peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians collapsed in 2014 and analysts say there is little prospect of reviving them. Bennett, a nationalist atop a cross-partisan coalition, opposes Palestinian statehood. His government has focused on policies to improve economic conditions in the Palestinian territories.

Police arrest murder, hijacking suspects in KwaZulu-Natal

KwaZulu-Natal police have swooped on murder and hijacking suspects in two separate arrests over the past few days.

KZN SAPS spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said that police arrested two suspects, aged 21 and 22, for the murder of Petros Buthelezi, 54, who was gunned down at home on the night of 9 September.

Gwala said Buthelezi was at home with his family when the two armed suspects allegedly entered his property at around 8.30pm.

“At gunpoint, the suspects robbed the occupants in the house of cellphones and speakers. The suspects shot Buthelezi in the chest and also stabbed him before fleeing the scene. The victim was declared dead at the scene,” Gwala said.

A case of murder was opened at Babanango police station.

“On Friday 10 September 2021, the suspects involved in the murder were spotted at Nquthu taxi rank and police were immediately alerted,” she said.

Police arrested the men and charged them with murder.

In a separate incident Gwala said police had arrested three suspects who had allegedly hijacked a motorist in Down Avenue in Montclair at 7pm on 11 September 2021.

“The suspects shot the victim on the leg before robbing him of his cellphone and a vehicle. They fled the scene with the victim’s vehicle. Charges of carjacking and attempted murder were opened at Montclair SAPS,” Gwala said.

She said police officers, working together with the team from a vehicle tracking company, had followed up on information regarding the hijacked vehicle on Sunday12 September.

“The information led the team to Malangeni on the South Coast where the vehicle was spotted. Three suspects aged between 28 and 31 were placed under arrest for possession of a stolen vehicle,” Gwala said.

“They will also be profiled to check if they are linked to other carjacking cases reported in Montclair and surrounding areas,” she said.

They suspects are expected to appear in the Durban Magistrates Court this week.

We’ve got all the latest news stories and headlines in South Africa you really need to know on Tuesday 14 September 2021.

There seems to be no limit to how depraved some men can be when it comes to attacking women in South Africa. Yet another horrendous case of gender-based violence. This time the victim is a mother living in Benoni, Gauteng. She was doused in petrol and set alight outside her daughter’s pre-school. Just when we think nothing could surprise us, it does.

TODAY’S LATEST NEWS IN SOUTH AFRICA, Tuesday 14 September

Benoni mom ‘petrol-bombed’ in her car – allegedly by spouse

Horrible, horrible stuff: A mother from Benoni, Gauteng is fighting for her life in ICU alongside another female victim, after her vehicle was doused in petrol and set alight by a man believed to be her spouse.

The shocking scenes played out in front of a pre-school, where the daughter of the badly burnt driver attends classes. It’s understood that the male suspect poured petrol over himself AND the car, before igniting the flammable liquid.

The man at the centre of this mindless and violent act suffered critical burns, whereas the women involved were diagnosed with ‘serious burn wounds’ by Fire Services at the scene.

UK health chiefs recommend COVID-19 jabs for 12-15 year-olds

All children aged between 12 and 15 years should be offered but not required to take vaccinations against coronavirus, the chief medical officers who advise the UK’s four governments, said on Monday.

Britain has been one of the country’s hardest hit by Covid-19, recording more than 134,000 deaths of those catching the disease.

Despite a successful vaccination programme, case rates remain stubbornly high due to the emergence of the Delta variant, and officials are anxious about them rising further now that schools have returned after the summer break.

Vaccinating children has become a thorny issue, despite other countries pushing ahead with jabs.

Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI), which advises UK health departments on immunisation, currently says the “margin of benefit, based primarily on a health perspective, is considered too small to support advice on a universal programme of vaccination of otherwise healthy 12 to 15-year-old children at this time”.

But the chief medical officers (CMO) of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland said the vaccines should be made available, after taking into account wider issues such as education and mental health.

The CMOs said vaccinating 12-15 year-olds “will help reduce transmission of Covid-19 in schools”, with around three million children potentially eligible for the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine.

Reunited! Baby stolen in Cape Town hijacking now back with his mom

All too often, stories of criminality in South Africa don’t come with a happy ending. However, we are pleased to report that this particular incident has come to a rather heartwarming conclusion. Thanks to the efforts of both community forums and diligent police officers in Cape Town, a baby stolen in a hijacking this morning has made it home safely.

On Monday afternoon, SAPS verified several key details about this brazen hijacking:

  • A silver VW Polo was hijacked in Bishop Street, Observatory.

  • The victim’s seven-month-old baby was in the vehicle and suspect/s made off with the baby inside.

  • OBSID (Observatory Improvement District) informed SAPS which immediately set to work.

  • Reports have confirmed that the baby was recovered, unharmed, and reunited with his mother.

  • The baby was apparently dropped on the side of the road still strapped to his car seat when a woman heard him crying.

  • One suspect has been arrested on Monday, and further busts are expected in the days to come.

Gauteng Education Department opens second phase of 2022 applications

The second phase of the Gauteng Education Department’s online applications opened on Monday, 13 September. The current phase of applications is expected to last until October and is meant for parents and guardians whose children are starting primary or secondary school in 2022 or those who missed out on the first phase.

The Gauteng Education Department said more than 73 000 successful Grade 1 and 8 applications were received by 12:00 on Monday, the first day of Phase 2 2022 Online Admissions applications.

“As of 12 noon, a total of 73 305 successful Grade 1 and 8 applications were recorded on our system,” said the department.

“Of the total figure, the number of applications recorded for Grade 1 are 69 300 and Grade 8 recorded 3981 applications.”

The provincial education department said Phase 2 was initially intended to be for parents and guardians with children that would be attending Grade 1 and 8 next year at Gauteng public schools. However, the department realised that there were several parents and guardians that were unable to apply on time during the first phase – for learners in Grade 7 at public schools – therefore the criteria was expanded.

Covid-19 third wave shows a ‘fluctuation’ in cases in KZN

KwaZulu-Natal’s third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic has been characterised by a fluctuation in the number of new cases, hospitalisations and deaths premier Sihle Zikalala said.

“Thankfully, the curve so far appears to have been less severe this time around, when compared to the second wave,” Zikalala told journalists at a media briefing on Sunday.

“It has also been driven by clusters in schools, meaning that a high number of learners and educators have been affected in Ethekwini, Umgungundlovu, King Cetshwayo, Umkhanyakude and Ilembe districts,” Zikalala said.

A number of cluster cases had also been detected at the province’s prisons, which affected both employees and inmates. Hospitals in KZN, in both the public and private sectors, had a total of 1 940 patients admitted for Covid-19 as at Friday 10 September.

SASSA SRD grant: Over 13 million applications received since August

During his address to the nation on Sunday 12 September, President Cyril Ramaphosa insisted that government remains committed to providing South Africa’s most vulnerable people with financial support to see them through the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Ramaphosa said that to date, a total of 8.3 million people have successfully applied for the SASSA Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, with payments currently being administered.

The South African Social Securities Agency (SASSA) has received a total of 13 million applications since the SRD grant was reopened in August 2021, with just over 3.7 million applications being declined, “mainly because applicants have other identified sources of income or are registered for assistance like UIF and NSFAS”.

During his address, Ramaphosa said that the SRD grant is critical in assisting members of the South African public with no other form of income or aid. South Africa was moved to Adjusted Level 2 lockdown on Monday, with government satisfied that declining daily infections rates allow for the broader reopening of the economy and greater freedom of movement.

Justice Department: Child maintenance payments to be delayed

If you’re a child maintenance recipient, you are likely to wait a little longer for payments as the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development has announced that its systems used to administer the payouts are not accessible.

This is due to a ransomware attack on IT systems at the department.

“Child maintenance payments will be delayed due to departmental systems, including MojaPay, not being currently accessible. MojaPay is the system the department utilises to administer maintenance payments,” said spokesperson Steve Mahlangu.

Last week, the department announced it was the victim of a malicious cyber security hack. This affected all electronic services provided by the department including the issuing of letters of authority, bail services, email, and the departmental website.

When will child maintenance payments be made?

The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development says it cannot yet give an exact date for when the system for child maintenance payments will be back online. However it stresses that it will ensure all child maintenance monies are kept secure for payment to the rightful beneficiaries when everything is back in order.

Mahlangu adds that the current IT system problems do not affect the receipt of child maintenance from the maintenance paying parent or employers who deduct these from the paying parent’s salary.

“The monthly child maintenance deductions will go ahead as scheduled. IT experts from the department, industry partners and selected organs of State are working together to urgently restore the systems affected by the ransomware attack, including MojaPay. The MojaPay system will be given the utmost priority to ensure that any inconvenience to maintenance beneficiaries is minimised,”

Department of Justice and Constitutional Development’s spokesperson Steve Mahlangu

Progress has been made since the cyber-attack – staff members at various levels have been migrated into the new email solution. The departmental website had also been restored, so as to be able to publish updates regarding services to the public.

“The Masters Offices are currently, as an interim measure, using a manual process to provide bereaved families, in exceptional cases, where there is a need to access funds from the deceased’s banking account for burial costs. No manual letters of executorship or authority will be issued in this crisis period,” he said.

Mabuyakhulu, 15 co-accused back in court today for corruption trial

The corruption trial of African National Congress (ANC) KwaZulu-Natal deputy chairperson Mike Mabuyakhulu and 15 others will continue in the High Court in Durban on Tuesday.

The postponement comes after three business entities made an application to have their charges withdrawn.

The charges relate to allegations that during Mabuyakhulu’s tenure as Economic Development MEC, he authorised the deposit of R28 million in various accounts for a Jazz Festival, which never took place.

It is alleged that Mabuyakhulu then received a R300 000 kickback.

Mabuyakhulu stepped aside from his position in May as required by an ANC resolution.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) provincial spokesperson Natasha Kara says, “They made representation to the state and the court as well. Those representations are part of the court record. I will not be able to go into details.”

“State’s intention will be to have the trial begin and see to a conclusion. However, if you look at the representation and the reason for postponement there were in the vest of the defence in this matter,” explains Kara.

Vusi Khumalo and Nomle Ngubane were in court yesterday:
