Corruption, maladministration continue to challenge African countries: Dr Moeti

The World Health Organisation (WHO) Sub-Saharan Regional Director for Africa, Dr Matshidiso Moeti says Africa loses $88 billion each year through illicit financial flows which could have been injected into the continent’s economies for sustainable development.

Delivering the 21st annual Steve Biko lecture, she says with stronger political will to address corruption and maladministration, African countries would be able to successfully maintain their nations and gain negotiating power on the global stage.

Ant-apartheid activist Biko was killed in police custody 44 years ago.

The 21st Steve Biko Memorial Lecture:

However, Moeti says the COVID-19 pandemic has helped some African leaders realise opportunities for self-sufficiency.

She has commended South Africa for standing up to open the first mRNA vaccine hub in Africa.

Doctor Moeti says being able to create and build for one’s own people is a principle of black consciousness.

She says for South Africa to go ahead with the hub in Cape Town without commitment from big pharmaceutical companies, shows the continent’s dedication to eventually rely on itself.

South Africa: Today’s latest news and headlines, Monday 13 September 2021

A lot can change overnight, or over the course of one weekend, but we’ll keep you in the know with the latest news stories and headlines in South Africa on Monday 13 September 2021.

We’re back to Level 2. President Cyril Ramaphosa confirmed what we already suspected, that based on the country’s rate of infection and hospitalisations, the National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) and Cabinet agreed that South Africa can now function at Alert Level 2. This decision will be reviewed after two weeks, when further changes may be announced.

TODAY’S LATEST NEWS IN SOUTH AFRICA, Monday 13 September

Level 2 CONFIRMED: Ramaphosa eases SA lockdown restrictions

It’s official – having spent the better part of three months languishing under Level 3 lockdown restrictions as the country battled the third wave of COVID-19 infections, President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that the decline in cases warrants a shift to Level 2, meaning a host of restrictions are set to be eased or done away with entirely.

With the country now bound to the relaxed regulations stipulated under Level 2 lockdown, here’s what the public can expect to change when the shift comes into effect at midnight tonight

During his address to the nation on Sunday evening, Ramaphosa said that the decision to move the country to Level 2 follows meetings held between members of the National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC), as well as cabinet. The committee resolved that the decline in daily infection rates allows for the easing of restrictions.

“When I last addressed the nation, we were heading towards the peak of the third wave of infections, headed by the Delta variant. We said then that the third wave would be more severe and last longer than the previous two waves, and that has been proven to be correct,” he said.

Vaccine passport: Ramaphosa says SA looking at ways to implement

A vaccine passport may soon be a reality for South Africans. President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Sunday that the government is looking at ways to implement a vaccine passport to open up travel and allow people to attend sports and religious gatherings. He said various methods could be considered including digital devices.

Ramaphosa addressed the nation on Sunday night to announce Cabinet’s decision to move the country back to Lockdown Level 2. He announced that 14.6 million vaccine doses had been administered to date. He reiterated that as many as one million does are administered every 4 to 5 days.

“We will also be providing further information on an approach to ‘vaccine passports’, which can be used as evidence of vaccination for various purposes and events.”

Ramaphosa calls on South African men to step up to the plate

During his address to the nation on Sunday, President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed his concerns about the recent brutal attacks and murders of women during Women’s Month, saying SA men should step up to the plate.

“We have just finished Women’s Month, where we planned to celebrate the success of women in many fields.

“Instead, our country bore witness to several brutal attacks by men against women.

“This month alone, there have been a number of terrible crimes committed against women and girls.”

RAMAPHOSA LISTED SOME OF THE INCIDENTS:

  • Fort Hare law student, Nosicelo Mtebeni, who was murdered and dismembered in East London;

  • The Grade One pupil from Khensani Primary School in Soshanguve, who was raped in the school’s toilets;

  • Palesa Maruping, who was found hanging from the ceiling of a house in Khuma Location in the North West;

  • Pheliswa Sawutana, who was strangled to deathMin Kosovo informal settlement in Cape Town.

KZN killing spree: Six people – including three children – gunned down

Heinous scenes unfolded on Saturday, with a man embarking on a brutal killing spree in which he carried out the murders of six people – including three children – in a host of locations in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) before being fatally wounded during a dramatic shootout with police officers.

The killer – a security guard who worked at New Formosa in Estcourt – began his murderous endeavour by shooting his colleague before proceeding to the homes of his ex-girlfriend and her relatives, with police ultimately shooting and killing him in Kraansdorp.

Mayor Pieter De Villiers? Good Party nominate former Springbok coach

Former Springbok coach Peter De Villiers has hung up his whistle for the time being and has been announced as the Good Party’s candidate for the role of Mayor of Drakenstein in the Western Cape.

The Good Party made the announcement along with their candidates for other wards and municipalities ahead of upcoming Local Government Elections set to kick off later this year, and said that De Villiers has all the right qualities to ensure that he is successful as Mayor.

In their statement, the Good Party said that Peter de Villiers has been a leader all his life, and his career at the highest level of rugby has prepared him for the challenges he would face in a political environment.

“He knows the pressures of expectation, and the powers of teamwork. How to manage and motivate people into giving their best. How to break through false ceilings and scale global heights,” they said.

Little Daniel Kerswell celebrated his birthday in hospital on Sunday

Little Daniel Kerswell, who was accidentally run over by his father in their driveway, celebrated his second birthday in hospital on Sunday.

According to his mother Danelle, the family was allowed into his room, where they sang Happy Birthday for him and spent some time with him.

“It was so special, we all sang for him, and his brother got to see him.”

She said Daniel is still on a ventilator and there is an issue with one of his lungs.

Danelle said her little blonde, blue-eyed boy looked better on Sunday despite some setbacks earlier this week.

“He started getting fits and was sent for CT scans, and fortunately, it showed there was no damage to his brain. Thank you Jesus!”

‘Give us an end-date for all lockdowns’ – DA leader, John Steenhuisen

DA leader John Steenhuisen has called on the government to set an end date for the country’s current state of disaster and perpetual lockdown periods.

Steenhuisen said in a statement that while the DA welcomed the easing of restrictions, the party called on him “to go further and commit to an end date for all lockdown restrictions as well as the State of Disaster.”

“The only possible reason for any further restrictions would be to allow everyone over the age of 18 the chance to get vaccinated. And since the 18-35 year-old group have had access to the vaccine since 20 August, this deadline must now be well within our sight,” Steenhuisen said.

“At the very latest, this should happen by mid-November, which would give this age cohort a full 12 weeks to get both jabs. This deadline needs to be announced now so that businesses affected by lockdown restrictions can plan accordingly,” he said.

He said the decision could not be made at the last minute as waiting would place more businesses and jobs in jeopardy.

“If business owners know that there will be no more restrictions and curfews on 15 November, they can try to make plans to bridge their business over the period until then. If President Ramaphosa does not think this is what needs to happen, he must give his and his government’s reasons why not,” he said.

He said citizens had made “extraordinary sacrifices” in order to comply with restrictions and regulations that were seldom explained or justified.

“The president needs to take citizens into his confidence and let them know precisely why these sacrifices must continue. Specifically, he must set out the criteria his cabinet requires to be met for the State of Disaster to be lifted so that everyone can know whether these are rational and fair decisions,” he said.

Steenhuisen said he had asked this question on 17 August in a written parliamentary question and he was still waiting a reply.

“That is not good enough, particularly when government’s decisions around lockdowns and economic restrictions already have so little credibility. It is also not good enough for the president to say “as soon as everyone has been vaccinated” when speaking of our return to normality, as we will never get to a point where everyone has had the jab,” he said.

Steenhuisen added that it was “crucial” to start applying a regional model for the restrictions, based on the healthcare capacity of the region.

“Infection trends and vaccination rates differ greatly across different parts of the country and there is no single, neat wave that applies to the entire country, or even entire provinces,” Steenhuisen said.

“Some areas have sufficient hospital capacity to no longer warrant restrictions. It is extremely selfish to subject South Africans to more unnecessary economic hardship when the local conditions do not justify this. Citizens cannot be held to ransom by the whims of a group of people obsessed with central command and control of the economy – people who have never run a business themselves, never created a single job and whose own jobs and salaries are never at stake no matter how badly they get their Covid response wrong,” he said.

De Lille says aim of GOOD party is to dismantle apartheid legacy

GOOD party leader, Patricia de Lille says the aim of the party will be to dismantle the legacy of apartheid.

She was speaking in Johannesburg at the launch of the party’s manifesto where she outlined its plans and revealed the party’s mayoral candidates.

In the 2019 national elections, the party obtained about 70 000 votes.

The party now hopes to achieve 25% of the votes in the local government elections.

De Lille says in dismantling the legacy of the apartheid regime, they will address housing and transport challenges, ensuring that services are closer to the people who need them.

“We will fix South Africa only when we achieve spatial justice, social justice, economic justice and environmental justice. It demands to breaking down the apartheid spatial planning and we all know that people of colour were put far away from cities and an indictment to us in our new democracy today is that 27 years after our democracy, people still live far away from work opportunities,” she adds.

2021 LGE | GOOD party launches its election manifesto in Sandton:

Meanwhile, former Springbok coach, Peter de Villiers has been announced as mayoral candidate for the GOOD party in the Drakenstein local municipality in the Western Cape.

The party says the former coach understands the struggle of people of colour.

GOOD Chairperson Sam Shabane says, “He also understands the cycle of poverty and the difficulties people of colour face when they break free of their historical cast. He has eaten at some of the poorest tables in Paarl and has also seen many people in the poorest states.”
