Gauteng: Increase of children trafficking due to Covid-19 pandemic

Gauteng saw an increasing number of incidents of children being trafficked for sexual exploitation due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

RISK FACTORS CHANGED DURING COVID-19

Justice and constitutional development deputy minister John Jeffery said this at an event commemorating the World Day Against Human Trafficking in Pretoria on Friday.

According to Jeffery the risk factors changed during Covid-19 due to higher levels of unemployment and loss of family income.

“It must be noted that although the numbers are not large, SA is seeing an increasing number of trafficking convictions. There is no significant evidence of citizens travelling abroad and to SA for child sex tourism,” he said.

He furthermore said the convictions provided significant insights.

“Children are the most at risk for sex trafficking and forced labour. The vulnerabilities identified were more prevalent in girl children. Children at higher risk were from parents who were in conflict in their relationships or from parents who have disadvantaged themselves or were victims of substance abuse.

“Some parents were responsible for trafficking their children for purposes of sexual exploitation due to loss of income as a result of Covid-19. Some parents seek work on farms but they do not want to be rescued from traffickers because they want to preserve their employment.

“Children were exploited for purposes including sexual exploitation, drug trafficking, and forced marriages,” he said.

Jeffery said the border closures and movement restrictions of migrants had reduced many activities that have severely disrupted trafficking activities.

According to the South African National Human Trafficking Hotline, SA is a source, transit, and destination country for victims of trafficking.

“Our country has become a prime destination for international trafficking syndicates to operate.

“Currently, stats show that only 1% of all victims are ever rescued.”

THE APPROACHES TRAFFICKERS USE TO LURE VICTIMS:

Fake job offers, mainly for jobs abroad. When the person arrives, they find that the conditions are different from the ones advertised in the job offer – Often, the victim’s ID is taken away, and they are forced into labor or sexual exploitation.

Loverboy – the trafficker courts the victim and pretends to be falling in love with her. Once he earns the victim’s trust, he sells her to be sexually exploited. The Internet, especially social networking sites, is the most used tool by traffickers to research and select potential victims.

CRIMES OFTEN RELATED TO TRAFFICKING:

  • Forced begging

  • Forced organ removal

  • Forced and early marriages

  • Forced adoption

  • Baby harvesting

Watch | Amazulu coach Benni McCarthy appears to swear at opposition player after telling him to “Shut up” during post match interview

Amazulu coach Benni McCarthy appeared to swear at an opposition player following his clubs 0-1 loss to Nyasa Big Bullets on Friday.

The Malawian side Big Bullets stunned Amazulu on their home turf, in their CAF Champions League debut, a loss that seemed to leave McCarthy rattled.

Big Bullets were in good form

Big Bullets would’ve travelled to South Africa in high spirits, having got out the blocks firing in the Malawian domestic league. While little was known about the team on South African shores, they would’ve backed themselves going into battle with McCarthy’s Amazulu, having recently clinched back to back victories back home.

Home side is not on a good run

The Amazulu side entered this encounter with contrasting form to Big Bullets, having failed to secure a victory in all competitions domestically so far this season. That in itself comes in stark contrast to the form the club showed upon the arrival McCarthy during last season DStv Appearance. The former Bafana Bafana International led Usuthu to an impressive winning streak which saw them impressively climb up the league table.

For that very reason, many would’ve backed Amazulu regardless, especially against a little known side. McCarthy had also been very vocal about the Durban-based side’s potential prowess in the CAF Champions League, but arresting their slump proved to be a bridge to far for them as Big Bullets who not only left South Africa with the win but an away goal courtesy Nickson Nyasulu.

Did McCarthy swear at the opposition?

That goal has now left Amazulu with an uphill battle on their hands, as they prepare to try and turn the tie around in Big Bullets background. That prospect seems to already be stressing McCarthy, who, in the heat of the moment, seemed to turn around during his post match conference and yell “Shut up you. Jou ma se po*s” to a Big Bullets player who seemed to be celebrating too vocally close to him.

Hero Pitbull dies after protecting family in horrific home invasion

It took Molly, a female Pitbull, mere seconds to realise that her family’s life was in grave danger, and she unhesitatingly flew into action to protect them from the armed assailants during a home invasion earlier this month.

MOLLY WAS STABBED COUNTLESS TIMES IN HER HEAD AND BODY

Molly has been hailed a Hero by a family of Rocklands who survived a horrific home invasion thanks to her protective instincts.

Animal Welfare Society of SA (AWS) sadly announced on Friday that Molly had unfortunately died.

“We tried our best to save Molly, but sadly, she had lost too much blood, and her injuries were too severe.”

It said despite being beaten and stabbed countless times in her head and body Molly put up a very brave fight during the home invasion, and the assailant quickly realised that he had more than met his match and decided to beat a hasty retreat leaving Molly dying in a pool of blood on the floor.

“Molly had lost so much blood that the room resembled a “murder scene” and in between lapsing in and out of countiousness she desperately tried to get up to continue defending the hysterical occupants.”

The AWS said Pitbull Terriers are arguably the most misunderstood of all dog breeds.

“Humans have sadly exploited and abused the breed for centuries to the detriment of the breed and society as a whole.

“These days one hardly ever hears or reads anything positive about this beleaguered breed which is why we felt it necessary to share Molly’s heroic story with you.”

“Anyone who has ever owned a properly socialised Pitbull who has been made to feel a part of the family will readily attest to the courageous nature of these brave dogs who regardless of the size or nature of the threat to themselves or those they hold dear to their heart will willingly lay down their lives in defence of those they cherish.”

Aditya Chopra launches Saathi Card to provide health insurance, school fee allowance, ration supply, among other benefits to the industry’s daily wage earners and their families

Yash Raj Films has been at the forefront of providing aid towards the Hindi film industry’s daily wage earners. To sustain this beyond just a response to COVID-19, Aditya Chopra has launched Saathi Card, modelled on the lines of an internationally acclaimed policy concept - "universal basic support" under The Yash Chopra Foundation, to provide health insurance, school fee allowance, ration supply, annual health check-ups among other benefits to the industry’s daily wage earners and their families.

Anyone who is a registered member of the Hindi Film Federation in Mumbai, is 35 years of age or above, and has at least one direct dependent, is eligible to apply for the Saathi Card at https://ift.tt/3C3yAzC. Cardholders will be able to use it for healthcare including health insurance up to Rs. 2 lakh, free annual check-ups and discounts on medical bills and treatment services. Registered individuals can also use the card to support their children’s education as YRF is providing an allowance for school fees, stationery, and uniforms. They can also use the card to purchase ration supplies.

The deadly coronavirus pandemic has plagued the entertainment industry since last year and the daily wage earners have been deeply affected. Recently, the biggest production house of India, Yash Raj Films launched ‘Yash Chopra Saathi Initiative’ to provide minimum basic support to thousands of the industry’s daily wage earners affected by the pandemic and initiated a direct benefit transfer of Rs 5000 to the women and senior citizens of the industry, as well as distributed Ration kits to a family of 4 for a specified period of time.

Aditya Chopra also rolled out a plan to vaccinate thousands of workers of the Hindi film fraternity which helped shoots to restart in Mumbai. Last year, during the lockdown, Aditya Chopra also lent his support to thousands of daily wage earners of the film industry by crediting money directly into their bank accounts.

Akshaye Widhani, Senior Vice President of YRF, says, "At Yash Raj Films we believe not just about reactively donating but it is rather a more strategic thought process and plan of action to create sustainable impact in the lives of our beneficiaries. The Saathi Card is our way of being there as a friend & support system to those who form the backbone of our industry. In times to come, we will expand the scope of this support to enhance the quality of life for those part of our community."

SCOOP: Deepika Padukone to play Meenamma in a song in Ranveer Singh starrer Cirkus?

Blockbuster filmmaker Rohit Shetty’s Sooryavanshi was all set to release on March 24, 2020. Sadly, the Coronavirus-induced lockdown spoiled the release plan. It’s been more than 1 ½ years and the Akshay Kumar starrer still hasn’t seen a release. Meanwhile, Rohit Shetty scripted and shot another film in the interim, titled Cirkus. It is said to be an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s play, ‘The Comedy of Errors’ and stars Ranveer Singh, Varun Sharma, Pooja Hegde and Jacqueline Fernandez.

Deepika Padukone as Meenamma

Earlier this year, there were reports that Deepika Padukone will have a cameo appearance in Cirkus and that she’ll also appear in a song. Now, a source has shared a very interesting detail about the superstar actress’ appearance in the film. The source informed Bollywood Hungama, “It is said that Deepika Padukone will reprise her character of Meenamma from Chennai Express (2013). It was also directed by Rohit Shetty and it ranks as one of the finest performances of her career. Nowadays, it’s rare to see actresses in a memorable, comic role. Meenamma was one such character that was unanimously loved and it’ll be interesting to see Deepika in that part in a funny film like Cirkus.”

A trade expert said, “Ranveer Singh and her wife Deepika Padukone are one of the hottest pairs of Bollywood. To see them together, even if it’s for one scene or song, will enhance the excitement for the film. And if Deepika will play Meenamma, it’ll be sone pe suhaga. One has to give it to Rohit Shetty. He thinks of such interesting stuff and he knows how to pull audiences to cinemas, whether it is getting Inspector Singham in Simmba (2018) or getting Singham and Simmba both in Sooryavanshi or getting Meenamma in Cirkus. Whenever it’ll release, it’s sure to generate tremendous hype.”

Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone will also be seen together in another film, ’83, wherein the former plays Kapil Dev and the latter his wife. Deepika Padukone is also a co-producer on this much-awaited sports film that is expected to release in cinemas in 2021-end. Cirkus, meanwhile, might not make it this year and will arrive in theatres in 2022.
