TASAC Plans Major Upgrades at Liuli, Njambe, and Manda Ports to Improve Passenger Services

TASAC Focuses on Improving Passenger Services at Liuli, Njambe, and Manda Ports

The Board of Directors of the Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC) has directed the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) to construct passenger terminals and toilets, as well as install a solar-powered light tower to aid maritime navigation at night on Lake Nyasa.

Speaking to residents at the Liuli, Njambe, and Manda ports during a visit on December 5, 2024, TASAC Board Chairperson, Nah. Mussa Mandia, highlighted the challenges faced by many local communities living along the shores of Lake Nyasa. These residents rely heavily on these ports for transportation but often face difficulties such as lack of shelter, toilet facilities, and proper infrastructure while waiting to board or disembark from ferries.

“Many citizens depend on these ports for transportation. We've observed that the Liuli, Njambe, and Manda ports face similar challenges affecting multiple institutions. We’ve taken note of these issues and will notify the relevant authorities for timely action,” Mandia stated.

The proposed facilities, including a resting area for passengers and toilet blocks, fall under the jurisdiction of the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA), which is expected to implement solutions within the current financial year. Mandia urged TPA to prioritize and expedite the construction of these critical infrastructures.

Engineer Fabian Paulo added that plans and budget allocation for the construction of passenger terminals, toilets, and solar-powered light towers had already been made. The aim is to enhance safety and improve service delivery at these ports.

“We have a strategic plan to improve transportation services for citizens relying on Lake Nyasa. Solar-powered lights have already been purchased, and funding for the construction of the facilities at Liuli, Lundo, Njambe, and Manda ports has been allocated within the 2024/25 financial year,” said Engineer Paulo. “We urge local authorities to allocate land for these developments so that we can begin construction without delay.”

Residents have voiced their concerns, particularly about the lack of toilet facilities, inadequate lighting at night for fishing boats, and the absence of shelters for passengers to protect them from rain and sun.

George Patriki, a local resident, expressed the need for toilet facilities, stating, “There is no place for passengers to relieve themselves when they arrive or depart from the ferry.”

Edward Mpangala, another resident, highlighted the safety risks due to the lack of a light tower: “There is little safety for our boats, especially at night, because there are no guiding lights to show the direction of the ports.”

In response to these concerns, the TASAC Board has instructed the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) to ensure safety improvements and coordinate with other agencies to provide essential services such as electricity and roads to enhance the overall functionality of these ports.

This initiative is part of TASAC's ongoing efforts to improve maritime transport infrastructure and services for the local communities dependent on Lake Nyasa for their livelihood.
